The traffic back to Jersey is insane. By the time I head inside the motel, the afternoon is gone. I hastily pace back and forth as my call goes to Nate’s voice mail again. Shit. I don’t know what to do. I can’t go to Bierman yet. I still need more proof if I’m going to exonerate myself. I need to figure out who sent those emails, how this person got the nudes from my phone. And I still don’t understand how that bag of cyanide got into my closet, but I know it didn’t just walk in and plant itself. Taylor couldn’t have done this all herself. I went through and rearranged my closet after I went shopping with Mei and Jared, which was after Taylor showed up talking all that shit about how she was going to ruin my life. There was nothing there. And that tape. I need that security footage.
I try calling Nate again. There’s no answer, but it rings five full times before I get his voice mail.
His phone is on; he’s just not answering.

I know Nate’s going to think I’m crazy for doing this. But I’m not crazy. I love him. I’m sorry for what I did. I have to get him to understand that. No matter what it takes, he needs to know how I feel.
That’s why I’m here. In Ohio. In his dorm room. Draped across his bed in a flimsy crop top with thin straps and high-waisted jeans that make my ass look perfect. I took the G-5 since there were no more red-eyes left. Rehearsed words sit on my tongue, but I’m still not exactly sure what I’m going to say. I thought about taking off all my clothes and surprising him in one of the poses I’ve practiced, but this isn’t about sex. What we had was so much deeper than that.
I made a mistake, but I’m not the same insecure girl desperate for validation that I was back then. I won’t make it again. I want him and him only.
The latch on the door clicks open, and my eyes snap in that direction. I swallow, nerves suddenly crawling up my throat, making it harder to breathe.
Nate steps in, headphones blaring so loud I can hear the beat of the rap song he’s bumping his head to from here.
He looks up and stops short, his eyes finding me on his bed right away. “How the hell did you get in here?”
He definitely looks more disturbed than pleasantly surprised, but he doesn’t look totally revolted.
“Thought we could talk,” I say, ignoring his question.
