- About the Author
Clara was absolutely correct. She had saved their butts that night. It had been one of the most nerve-racking things that had happened while they were traveling.
“You did save us that time.”
“That time?” Clara said, head tilted in a mocking gesture. “Or every time?”
“You were amazing,” John said. It was true. Clara could talk her way into and out of any tricky situation they found themselves in while they traveled together. She was a natural at getting locals to talk to them, to make their experiences traveling as authentic and unique as possible. With her experience as a videographer, John had encouraged her to apply for an internship with an online news outlet. The money she had saved working two jobs would support her for the three months she needed. “You would be perfect for the job. You know that, right?”
Clara glanced up at the ceiling with a grimace. John knew she wasn’t sure she wanted to take the risk of leaving their comfortable apartment and two steady jobs. John’s opinion that she should become a reporter didn’t matter. What mattered was what Clara thought.
“I don’t want to talk about the job offer,” Clara said, her words clipped.
“Holy shit. They made you an offer? For the climate change thing?”
“I don’t want to talk about it.” Her voice was uncharacteristically soft.
“Whatever choice you make will be the right one.”
Clara’s response was muffled. John would let her avoid the conversation if she wanted to. He held himself back from giving her career advice.
“So you may have saved our butts, but I did offer a pretty good distraction at that bar in Santorini.” John grinned. Nothing got Clara out of a bad mood as quickly as a reminder of that night. “Not sure how we would’ve made it out of that one.”
Clara laughed. “It’s hard to be annoyed with you when I have video evidence of you dancing.”
“So, it’s almost as if you should hire me to be on your team tonight?”
“Don’t push your luck.”
“I hate to do this,” John said, shaking his head in what he hoped looked like a contrite manner. “But I’m going to have to remind you of last Saturday.”
Clara had attended a wrap party with John for a TV movie he’d worked on as the assistant director. He had introduced Clara to the cute craft services girl she hadn’t been able to take her eyes off all night.
“Okay, she was cute.” Clara crossed her arms over her chest.
“Are you blushing?”
“No.” Clara took a sip of her beer. “I said she was nice.”
“Was she ‘nice,’ or was she the best sex you’ve had in... forever?” John didn’t keep the smirk off his face, quoting Clara’s breathless praise.
