But I can’t delete it. All those moments of “Dominic and me” feel so right, and I can’t throw away what we had, even if Dominic could completely out of the blue. I can’t just shut off my feelings like that any more than this lady napping on the pool float in front of me can turn off the horrible sunburn taking up the left side of her body.
“Mister! Hey, mister!”
I peer down over the edge of my stand to see a little girl with one hand holding a bright red Popsicle, the other planted firmly—and very judgmentally—on her hip.
“Don’t you hear everybody screaming?” she asks.
Suddenly everything snaps into focus. I was staring at my phone so intently that I tuned everything out. And sure enough, over the dull roar of the waves breaking against the beach, I hear screams, shouts, people calling for 911.
The kid points with her Popsicle. “Somebody washed up on the beach.”
