- The Deception
“I tend to agree with you that none of the people you talked to about that file would ever want to hurt you. So I think Malachi is a possibility we need to either eliminate or prove, if we can.”
“All right,” she said, although she still sounded a bit uncertain.
“So the question is, do either of you want to go with me?” Amanda drew back slightly, staring. Quinn shrugged. “I didn’t really think so, but thought I’d ask in case either of you wanted to confront him at this point.”
And give him the pleasure of seeing the lives he’s ruined?
Adam’s thought sent a new sort of shiver through him. “No, thanks.”
“Ditto,” Amanda said, rather fervently.
“I’d rather focus on messing up his plans, if it is him,” Adam added.
“Good choice,” Quinn said. “Just wanted to be sure. We need to continue the coverage now that we’re certain it’s necessary. Liam will cover our shifts this weekend, because we have a trip of our own to take, one we can’t really change.”
“The wedding?” Amanda asked, clearly knowing about it.
Hayley noticed Adam’s look and explained. “My brother’s wedding. He’s marrying my best friend.”
Adam managed a smile. “I’ll bet there’s a story there. Congratulations to them both.”
“There is quite a story,” Hayley said, “and one I should tell you, now that I think about it. But right now I think Quinn needs to get going if he’s going to get back this afternoon.”
“This afternoon?” Adam asked. “I think there are only a couple of flights a day, and the return is later.”
“He’ll be flying Air Foxworth,” Hayley said with a grin. “He hasn’t had a chance to break out the toy in a while.”
They had their own plane. Adam stared at Quinn for a moment. He had obviously built the Foxworth Foundation into something bigger than Adam had ever realized.
“You’re not going alone, are you?” Amanda asked, sounding a bit anxious. “I mean...you’re the guy who shot him.”
“And vice versa,” Quinn said. “Evens that ground a bit. But I’ll take Liam with me. He’s working on finding out if the guy could have arranged this from his cell.”
Adam nodded slowly. “You mean who his visitors have been, cell mates who may have been released, or had visitors with potential, that kind of thing?”
“Exactly. So far nothing. He hasn’t had many visitors, but Liam’s just getting started on the connections once removed.”
“I just don’t see what he’d hope to gain out of it,” Amanda said.
“Maybe,” Adam said, “we need to think more about whether he’s got anything to lose.”
“Exactly,” Quinn agreed. “And these days the answer is, not much. So we’ll dig.”
