- The Deception
“It’s exactly what I wanted,” she said, just as quietly. “I just wasn’t sure you would.”
“I want to...tell him. I know that sounds—”
“Perfect. Just perfect.”
The cemetery was quiet, mostly deserted. They made the trek together, in silent respect for those who lay there. And when they stood by that stone once more, his throat was so tight he didn’t think he could speak.
But Greg Bonner’s daughter could.
“We did it, Dad,” she whispered. “We finished it. And found each other. Please be at peace.”
“I wish I could...ask him. For you, I mean,” Adam managed to say. He smiled a little tightly. “Although I can imagine what he’d say.”
Mandy went still, an odd look on her face, and she lifted her gaze from her father’s gravestone to his face. “You don’t have to imagine,” she said. “He told me.”
Adam blinked. “What?”
“Back when I asked him how the first week with his new partner had gone. He said ‘He’s a good, solid young man, the kind any father would be proud of. The kind any father of a daughter would be glad to have her bring home.’”
For a moment Adam couldn’t breathe. “He...said that?”
“He did. So you see, in a way, he already gave us his blessing.”
He had no words for what he was feeling. He could only grab Mandy and hold on, making a silent vow to her father that he would never betray the faith that had inspired those words.
I’ll see to her, sir. I swear it to you.
It was when they were back in his truck, and the Cascade Mountains looming ahead of them, that she said, “Do you think we could find a dog like Cutter?”
He laughed. “Are you sure you’ve got that much energy?”
“Good point,” she said.
“We’ll just have to come back and visit him. But we’ll find you a good horse, if you want.”
“Now that I would like. I’ve always wanted to learn. And I want to see those places you love.”
“Consider it done, then.”
“Good,” she said. And reached out once more to take his hand, careful not to pull it farther than it could go. “Then let’s go.”
To a new life.
He squeezed her hand, and they headed for home.
