Then he looked at Quinn. “If that guy ever turns up dead, you’ll be looking for me.”
“If that ever happens, we’ll be looking to help you,” Quinn said mildly. “Unless, of course, I run into him first.”
Adam blinked, then nodded.
“If you two men are finished with your chest-beating, can we get to something mundane like scheduling coverage?” Hayley suggested. Her tone was teasing, but there was nothing but love and pure female appreciation in her eyes and face as she looked at her husband. It was so apparent even a slow-witted guy like himself couldn’t miss it. He’d never in his life had a woman look at him that way. Without thought, and for reasons his mind refused to acknowledge, he glanced at Amanda. Who was looking at him.
He had to quickly look away. Reminded himself to stop looking at her altogether. Not because it kept making him think about how lovely she was, or how vivid those green eyes were, or how alive with that crackling intelligence. He had to stop looking at her because his imagination went crazy every time he did. Crazy enough to imagine he’d seen a bit of that kind of look in her eyes when she was looking at him.
And if there was anything he could do that was crazier than that, he couldn’t think of it.
Chapter 18
This was so pointless, Amanda thought on Monday morning after a very quiet weekend. She stared around at the bedroom her father had converted into an office, not really seeing it.
With each hour that passed, she was finding it harder and harder to take seriously the idea that there was any true threat to her. The more distant that day became in her memory the more convinced she became that it had simply been an accident, caused only by the reckless driving of someone trying to escape with the car he’d just stolen. She was using up the Foxworths’ time needlessly, when they could be helping someone who needed it. Not to mention she felt guilty because they were apart because of her.
Besides, she had other things occupying the forefront of her mind now. She couldn’t remember a time when she’d been so unhappy with herself. And it was rubbed home to her every day that Adam was around. Not that she had seen him all weekend. She knew he’d been here because Hayley and Quinn said so, but where she didn’t know.
