But most disconcerting of all, when he did catch her watching him, that barely banked anger seemed...missing. Which made no sense. Unless maybe she’d just decided all hands on deck was the wisest thing until this was resolved. He got the feeling she still didn’t believe someone was after her, but when they’d arrived here and Quinn had asked her for a list of everyone she’d called, she’d written it out without question or comment. Then he’d asked Adam for a list of Greg’s friends on the force, and anyone he had regular contact with.
“Back to our manpower situation,” Hayley said with a beatific smile. “It’s a good thing we have Adam here. Between him, Quinn and me, Liam and Cutter, we should be able to cover things.”
“Liam can do any immediate online digging we need, the rest we’ll give to Ty,” Quinn said. “We need to know if ol’ Trevor has had any interesting visitors lately. And I think I’d better handle poking at the people you called for help, Amanda. You or Adam would likely get more of an assist, but either of you would obviously tip anybody worried about what your father was investigating.”
Adam doubted Quinn was right about he himself getting more help from that quarter, but Amanda surely would. But there was another aspect he hadn’t thought of until now.
“Think out loud,” Quinn said, and it took Adam a moment to realize that was aimed at him.
“I... Just thinking it wouldn’t have to be someone she called.” He gestured at the list Amanda had made, lying on the table. “I know—knew—most of these people, and she’s right, I can’t imagine any of them ever wanting to hurt her. Her, of all people.”
“Why so sure?” Quinn asked.
Adam studied him for a moment. “It’s not just that they’re cops,” he said. “They all were friends of Greg’s. And...” He hesitated, glancing at Amanda, who seemed to be studying her list as if it might have changed since she wrote it. When he went on, his voice was very quiet. “They all know she’s living their worst nightmare. That any day, their own family could be where she is.”
Amanda’s head came up then. She looked at him, straight on, and his breath stopped in his chest. Not at something that was there in her eyes, her expression, but what was not.
The hatred was definitely gone.
Was she really capable of setting that near-fury aside so completely?
“But?” Quinn prodded.
“They could have said something to somebody else. In fact, it would be only natural to say to anybody who’d known Greg that they talked to his daughter, wouldn’t it?”
Quinn nodded, a slight smile on his face, as if of approval. “Excellent point.”
