- The Deception
“He knew he’d have to have his ducks in a row,” Adam said as Quinn stood looking at the compiled data. “There’s a faction in that city who would defend her practically to the death.”
“Because she sacrificed everyone else in the city to their wishes,” Quinn said with a grimace.
“Speaking of ducks in a row, this is way out of my league,” Mandy said warily.
“But not,” Quinn said mildly, “out of ours.”
She and Adam exchanged a glance as Quinn took out his phone and made two consecutive—and very short—calls. Apparently, when Quinn Foxworth called, there weren’t a lot of questions asked. Nor was he required to identify himself. If this man had you on his speed dial, you knew his voice.
“We need to send all of this to Ty,” he said. “He’ll access whatever camera footage there might be to confirm her presence in any of these instances. We only need one to get things started.”
“Uh...” Adam began hesitantly.
Quinn smiled at him. “I know, getting it that way won’t do for court, but one instance, plus the presence of a friend of ours, should be enough to get the official parties looking for the rest. We’ll let them worry about the legalities of evidence. We just want this over and Amanda safe.”
“Amen.”
Adam said it rather fervently, and Mandy couldn’t help feeling a twinge that he wanted this over with as soon as possible. So he could go home? Even as she thought it she knew how silly it was; people were trying to kill her and she was worried about how he meant wanting this over with? Whether he would vanish back over the mountains to his beloved Palouse...leaving her behind?
Self-centered much? This is more important. You know it is.
It was a surprisingly short time later that Cutter announced someone’s arrival with a bark. Then he headed downstairs toward the door. Since they knew Ty was at Foxworth headquarters in St. Louis, this was obviously the other person he’d called.
“That’ll be Gavin,” Quinn said, but he didn’t follow the dog. At their exchanged glances, Quinn smiled. “Cutter’ll show him where we are.”
“At this point, if you told me he’d open the door for him I’d believe it,” Mandy said, managing a smile.
“He could, if necessary. And if he deemed it appropriate for the new arrival to be allowed in.”
Adam laughed, but quickly added, “And I believe that. I’ve watched him working for a couple of weeks now. If you told me he could fly, I’d only wonder how, not if.”
