“We wouldn’t think of working with another designer; we have fallen in love with your vision for the library.” Mitzy sounded sincere and I relaxed a little. These women did not fuck around with their foundation. If they thought I could represent them on this show—What the fuck, I was going to be on TV?—then I would run with that. “Now, we know this is a lot to sort of drop on your lap with zero notice, but things have happened fairly quickly. They only contacted us about a week ago.” That prickle was more like a burn now. One week, this had all happened in one week? “They will bring in some of their own vendors, but they’ll allow us to keep the contractors you’ve hired.” Interesting. I’d heard for this kind of thing the network usually had a crew.
“I’ve never really done anything on this level.” It had to be said. “I mean I do my videos for my bedroom makeovers, but that’s like with my phone.”
“We understand,” Muffy told me, looking motherly, but also low-key bloodthirsty. “The network has a team that will give you all the support you need. This could be a boon for us,” she said, taking my hand while I hyperventilated on the inside. “For you and for us. This kind of visibility for our work could bring in funding that honestly could change thousands of lives. And as for you...this could open all kinds of doors. You deserve the world to see how brilliant you are. And it comes with more money, for you.” Mitzy winked as her sister delivered that little piece of news.
“On top of my salary from you?” I had to get clarity on that because I did not play when it came to checks. With a sharp nod Mitzy grabbed a sticky note, scribbled a number on it and slid it over to me.
Four episodes. $10,000 per episode.
Fuuuuuck.
I mean this was all sudden, and I knew shit like this never ever happened without some serious strings...so the enthusiasm levels were not as high as they could be, but for all those zeroes, baby I could buy some.
“Okay, sure. Yes.” I straightened my shoulders, nodding at them. “What do I need to do?”
“That’s exactly the kind of attitude we love,” the sisters said in unison. It really was in unison too. Lots of people could finish each other sentences, but these two could harmonize their speech. It was deeply weird, but they were about to put me on TV, so I wasn’t going to throw too much mental shade.
