Mitzy was smiling so hard her cheeks had to hurt and Muffy was bobbing her head hard-core. “This is all so exciting. We’d reached out to them months ago about collaborating on something, but gave up the idea when they never got back to us and then out of the blue they were back on.” That all sounded super fabulous, but why did I feel like the floor was about to disappear from under me?

“There’s just one last thing.” And...there it was. “The co-host would like to meet with you one-on-one.”

I was not always this paranoid, but every nerve in my body was at full alert. “Sorry, what network did you say the show was from?” Oh, that twitch in Muffy’s eye was definitely not a good sign. My stomach twisted again, and I had to rub a thumb over all those zeroes on the sticky note to calm back down.

“Streamflix...” Mitzy said slowly, like she was opening a can of soda after shaking it hard for a full minute. That prickle at the back of my neck upgraded to a stabbing-like sensation and my legs popped me off the chair on their own.

There was no way this could be...no. No. I wasn’t even going to think it.

“So.” Mitzy cleared her throat and Muffy was now fully impersonating Jack Nicholson as the Joker. “We do want to let you know that the co-host they’d like you to work with is someone you know.”

Before she even said it, I knew it. That fucking...

“Someone I know?” I asked very calmly, because it wasn’t their fault that I’d been working for Satan for years without knowing it.

“Yes, you didn’t tell us your former boss was an Olympic swimmer!” I was starting to really fear I was going to combust from fury. I could even feel the hair follicles on my scalp contracting I was so fucking mad. If that assface was here to ruin this for me because I refused to go back to work for him, I was going to end up in jail.

“It slipped my mind,” I said after I managed to unclench my jaw enough to make words. “Is he actually here now?” The way my heart was slamming itself against my ribs had to be blood rushing to my extremities, getting me ready to dick punch my former boss until he passed out.

“He is!” Mitzy confirmed happily, and that’s when I had to reach for the edge of the table so I didn’t collapse.
