“We would love to hear it later, but right now we have incredible news to share with you!” Mitzy clapped excitedly while Muffy shook her shoulders. The twins were usually pretty bubbly, but this was straight up ecstatic levels of excitement. I got excited too because if I knew anything it was that rich people only got this hype about money, so I clapped along hoping that meant my paycheck situation was about to get an upgrade.
“We’ve been approached by a network to do a four-part limited series about the renovation,” Mitzy informed me. “And—” they exchanged another one of those long looks, but this time it was a little more guarded “—they specifically asked about you.” For the life of me I couldn’t stop my head from whipping to the side or my eyes from narrowing at them when I heard that.
“They asked about me?” I jabbed a finger to my own chest while I attempted to get my wild-eyed stare under control.
Something was up. I could feel it.
There was a chance someone had researched the library renovation and had seen my name. And I knew Sturm’s had done a press release a couple of weeks ago mentioning me as the lead designer. But if I had this much luck, at least one of the ten thousand lotto tickets my grandma had made me buy for her over the years would’ve won something. My suspicious ass knew the other shoe was about to drop.
“They want you to be one of the hosts,” Mitzy clarified before I could ask. “Which we think is a fabulous idea. You would be an excellent representative for the foundation and our mission.”
“That’s...” I trailed off, as a feeling of unease crawled all the way up my spine. “Incredible.” Intellectually I knew that this was very good news, but that prickle of alarm would not quit. Something about this was off, for sure. But I also didn’t want them to think I was an ungrateful cunt, so I smiled wide and showed some teeth. “Thank you for that,” I muttered awkwardly. I loved to talk shit like I’d always be on deck to shoot my shot, but what I was feeling was not eagerness...unless eagerness manifested itself as armpit sweat and nausea.
