Behind Juliette, I saw a legion of mini-Lennys wearing Songbird crew uniforms and laden with stiff paper bags. Some of the names I recognized and some I didn’t, but each and every one of them looked as though they would destroy my credit card inside fifteen minutes.

‘We’ll take tea in my suite,’ the boss called to no one in particular, never once taking her eyes off me. ‘Best you and I set some ground rules before we go any further.’

If only we’d set the ground rules while we were on actual ground, I thought, following her inside her suite and stooping to pick up her sunglasses when she tossed them at an armchair and missed by a good three feet.

‘I’m sure Sarah has given you a thorough grilling and had you sign your soul away,’ Juliette said, peeling off her luxe layers. A leather jacket, silk scarf and cashmere cardigan were all dumped on the back of a chair where they hovered for a moment before slipping into a sexy, extravagant pile on the floor. ‘But all that really tells us is you’re not going to kill me in my sleep.’

I laughed as I followed her into her room, picking up the clothes, still carrying her sunglasses, but she did not reciprocate, and I gulped as it dawned on me it was likely a very real thing she had to worry about.

‘If we’re going to spend a week together, I need to know what your deal is.’ She chucked a neon-pink handbag on the sofa with the same lack of concern she’d shown all her other belongings, only the telltale interlocking silver Cs on the clasp giving away its worth. ‘So, who are you?’

‘I’m Fran, Fran Cooper,’ I said again, looking around the room as she opened every drawer in the dresser and pulled out half a dozen different jumpers until she settled on the right one.
