‘What are you talking about?’ Juliette replied, wriggling out of my vice-like grip and staring at me like she’d seen a ghost. ‘I was watching dolphins playing off the side of the yacht. Didn’t you see them from the helicopter?’
‘No,’ I said, regaining my composure and my rage as she sat there, staring at me and laughing. ‘I did not see any dolphins from the helicopter.’
‘It was amazing.’ She hopped to her feet and adjusted her grey marled jogging bottoms and the matching cropped sweatshirt that showed off a strip of soft, smooth tummy. ‘There were four of them, right there, swimming at the side of us. I love dolphins, I know it’s very Nineties kid of me, but they’re just so cool.’ I lay on the deck in thousands of dollars of couture and stared up at the sky. ‘What did you think I was doing?’
‘You know what? Never mind,’ I said, rolling onto my side, pushing up to my knees and forcing myself back to my feet. ‘You’re OK, I’m going to go back to my room.’
She picked up a strawberry and popped it in her mouth.
‘Aren’t you a bit overdressed for a Sunday?’ she asked.
‘Lenny already beat you to that one,’ I replied, drained.
‘You’re not going to tell me why you just stormed in here, wearing a ballgown?’
‘Are you going to tell me why you bailed on the Crystal Ball and left me on Panarea?’
Juliette pursed her lips and looked down, checking her nails. Her manicure had not held up well in my absence. Every nail was bitten down to the quick.
‘Fine,’ I said, a wave of exhaustion carrying me back insider. ‘That’s fine, I don’t really care anyway.’
She followed me across the deck and slammed the door to the terrace shut behind her. ‘What do you mean you don’t care?’ she asked. ‘Aren’t you supposed to be my assistant?’
‘I was,’ I replied. ‘But I’m not any more.’
With my head held high, I walked back across the room, and retrieved my bag from the floor. There would be no tears until I was safely in my cabin, under the running shower and blasting Taylor Swift from my phone. If nothing else, I had to get the dress off. Whatever magic spell Rachel cast to make it fit was wearing off fast and I was about to Hulk out of the thing at any second.
‘Wait a minute, did you go to the ball?’
I turned to see her staring at me with her hands on her hips.
