‘Thank you,’ she replied, giving me a little shimmy. ‘Yours too. Like something out of a fairy tale.’

‘It certainly doesn’t feel real,’ I told her, drying my hands on a soft, pink towel.

She raised her chin and gnawed on her bottom lip, as though she was debating whether or not to say something.

‘You’re here with Evan?’ she asked.

There it was.

‘No, I wouldn’t say I’m “with” him,’ I replied, alarm bells ringing loud and clear. ‘We just met. Well, we met this morning, sort of and we just met again. What I’m trying to say is, we’re not here together-together, if that’s what you mean.’

She smiled into the mirror, showing off her absolutely perfect teeth. ‘I was only going to tell you to enjoy him,’ she said as she accepted a small fluffy towel from an attendant who appeared out of nowhere. ‘Enjoy your evening, I mean.’

The attendant reached across me to turn off her still running tap as I stared at the woman’s reflection, watching as she sauntered away to join a gaggle of other beautiful women and cover them in extravagant kisses.

‘What was that supposed to mean?’ I muttered as they disappeared through the door and passed right in front of me, one amorphous, multi-limbed blob on the other side of the crystal wall.

‘I think this is what it means,’ the attendant replied, making an O shape with her thumb and forefinger on one hand and poking the forefinger of the other in and out of the hole rapidly.

‘Yeah, that’s what I thought too,’ I said as she nodded, cleaning up the basins with a smile on her face.

Evan was still waiting at our table when I returned and I watched his face light up as I walked towards him, his dark eyes sparkling. Every time I saw him was like the first time. The spark, the rush, the pull. It was a lot to process for a woman whose most erotically charged experience in the last five years was two consecutive nights at Magic Mike Live where I’d accidentally karate chopped one of the dancers in the nuts when he tried to give me a lap dance, earning myself a lifetime ban.

‘You came back,’ he said happily.

‘I did,’ I replied, picking up my Diet Coke and downing it quickly. The security guard was nowhere to be seen.

‘And did you think about my suggestion?’

‘Yes,’ I said. ‘And I don’t know if it’s a good idea.’
