  48. About the Author

“I’m calling the station,” Maya said quietly.

“I hate it when this happens,” Clara whispered.

Eve led her to the sofa. “Does it happen a lot?”

“No. I’ve never seen him get violent like that.”

“He hasn’t threatened you or anything?” Eve wasn’t sure why she was getting involved. This was not her business anymore.

“He sometimes shows up where I am and kind of…tries to patch things up. But Sawyer tells me not to be alone with him, so I always sort of freak out when I see him. But I don’t think he would actually hurt me.”

Eve wasn’t so sure about that. “He did hurt Sawyer. You know that, right?”

Clara’s eyes widened even more. “No. I mean, I get that he has an anger problem. And an alcohol problem. But I didn’t know that. What happened?”

She shouldn’t have said anything. It wasn’t her place to tell Clara the story if Sawyer hadn’t.

Maya must have picked up on Eve’s discomfort. “Olivia and Dom are on the way.” She smiled at Clara, who was still standing, and patted the spot next to her on the sofa. “Come on. We’re watching The Exorcist.”

“You’re watching what?”

“The Exorcist?”

Clara sat and squinted at the screen.

“Classic American horror movie in which a girl gets possessed by a demon—as one does. And her mother and a bunch of priests try to exorcise it—as one does.”

Clara still looked confused.

“You know, the one where her head spins around—”

Eve closed the computer just as the girl on the screen started vomiting and levitating.

“Right.” Maya got up and examined the DVD collection Lucille kept on top of the old TV in the room. “Splash! Let’s watch Splash.”

“I don’t think I know that one, either,” Clara said.

“Classic rom-com about a mermaid who rescues a man, and then many years later he rescues her?” Suddenly Maya cocked her head and squinted at Eve like she was trying to figure something out.

An hour later Sawyer arrived to pick up Clara. Eve stopped the movie and let him in. His eyes went right to his sister. “You okay?”

Clara popped up from the sofa. “I’m fine. You?”

“Yeah, yeah. We broke it up easily. Just took some time to sort it out. The woman was high on meth, and it turned out she’s manufacturing it over in Grand View.”

Eve sucked in a breath. She hadn’t meant to sound shocked, or disapproving. It was just that meth was something she had, until now, only read about in newspapers.

Sawyer glanced at her, and must have gleaned her meaning. “Welcome to small-town Ontario.”

“Is Dad on drugs, Sawyer?” Clara asked quietly.

“I don’t think so. At least not tonight. It actually sounds like the woman and her boyfriend started it.”

“Do you think—”
