“Thanks, Sawyer.” She pulled her shirt over her head. “You’re a good friend.”

A good friend.

Right.

Chapter Twenty

Chapter Twenty

Hello, friend, I need some benefits. Eve cracked herself up. But honestly, she was onto something with this new philosophy of just asking for what she wanted.

The reply came right away. Are you sexting me?

Oh! Now she really cracked herself up. She’d been joking, but she hadn’t meant it that way. But of course it had come across as a booty call. No! Not on purpose, anyway. I need to talk to you about my flooring situation.

She wasn’t actually sure if they were going to have sex again. Did their negotiation extend beyond just the one time last night? Did she want it to? Yes, of course she wanted it to. The man was a magical sex god. But was it wise? No, of course it wasn’t wise. But where was the balance between those two statements?

Anyway, it wasn’t up to her. He hadn’t said anything, as he’d driven her home that night, about a repeat performance. Was he even interested?

Sawyer: Well, that’s disappointing.

Well, okay then. She smiled.

Sawyer: Because I was thinking of sexting you.

Eve: Really?

Sawyer: Can I?

Eve: Sawyer, are you asking permission to sext me?

Sawyer: I think I am. This isn’t the right way to do it, is it?

Ugh, he was just so adorable. And upstanding and charming. And now she very much wanted to see what he was going to say.

Eve: Hit me.

Eve: That came out wrong. Not literally. Sext me.

Sawyer: I think we’re both really bad at this. But okay. Are you ready?

Eve: I am ready.

She was so ready, she was starting to get the tinglies.

What came through cracked her up anew. It was a photo of a box of condoms. Before she could reply, another one came in. It was a close-up of the expiration date, a date several years in the future.

Sawyer: I drove to Grand View to get these.

Eve: Why?

Sawyer: When you’re chief of police in a place like this, you can’t really do anything on the down low. I have people commenting on my purchases all the time. I shouldn’t be wasting my money on organic. I’m not getting my oil changed frequently enough. I have to be stealthy if I want to keep a secret.

A secret. He wanted to keep her a secret. That put a damper on her excitement.

But he was right. If anyone in this town got even the slightest inkling that they were spending time together, the matchmakers would have a field day.

Sawyer: So, not to be too utilitarian, but I just got off a shift, and I have an hour before I have to go see a client Jake and I are doing some work for.
