- About the Author
She didn’t answer, not in words, anyway. She just inhaled sharply, because he was getting right down to business. Usually he drew things out, but he was making good on his promise to be quick, using his fingers to stroke around her clit with the perfect amount of pressure. Pretty soon he would start whispering filthy things in her ear.
And…yep, as if on cue, he said, “I shouldn’t be doing this while I’m on duty, but the honey in that sandwich made me think of this honey.”
Normally a line that cheesy would have made her roll her eyes. But as she was learning, context was everything. He dragged his fingers down her opening before returning to her clit. “I’d like to have my face in there tasting you, but this will have to do for now.”
She was so close. She arched her back and writhed against him. He was hard, but she knew he wasn’t going to concern himself with that right now. He was so singularly focused on her, it was intoxicating.
“Come for me, Evie. Can you do that?”
She could, and she did, on a moan so obscene she was a little shocked it had come from her.
He gently pushed her off him. Panting, she started to reach for his belt, but realized she was still holding the sandwich with one hand. She’d had an orgasm while holding a grilled-cheese sandwich. She cracked up.
But when she moved to put it down and used her other hand to start to undo his belt, he shook his head and stepped away. “I gotta go back to work.” He stilled the hand that was in the process of setting down the sandwich. “You eat up, and I’ll catch you later.”
She rolled her eyes. “You are the worst.”
He smoothed his beard and saluted her from the doorway. “Yeah, but I’m also the best.”

Chapter Twenty-Four
The day before their departure for Toronto, the count was up to 133. Sawyer was inwardly gloating.
Or inwardly…something. He would replay their latest encounter in his mind, and it would start like gloating. But then it would turn into something less fun than gloating.
Half of him wanted to press fast-forward. To have it over and done with—to have Evie gone. Clara, too.
His phone dinged, and he rushed to look at it. She was right about them being bad at sexting, but his body reacted to his text notification chime as if it were the smuttiest sound he’d ever heard.
But it wasn’t her; it was Law. Where are you? We went ahead and loaded the canoe into Jake’s truck.
Right. He’d been living in his head so much, he’d forgotten they had plans to transport the canoe to the cove for its test voyage. Sorry. Got caught up at the station. I’ll meet you on Locust.
