  48. About the Author

“Where’s Amber?” Amber was one of Law’s employees, and she was usually behind the bar with him on weekend nights.

Jake shrugged. Jake was not much of a talker. He was more of a doer. Which he demonstrated by getting up, walking behind the bar, and pulling a pint for Sawyer.

“Thanks, man.” Sawyer chuckled as Jake’s presence behind the bar was seized on by a pair of women a few stools down.

“Can you make us cosmos with extra cherries?” one of them asked.

Jake blinked. “No.”

“Okayyy…”

The woman’s incredulous tone must have carried across the bar to Law, because he stopped bickering with Maya and came over.

“Sorry, sorry.” He made a shooing motion at Jake. “Get out.”

When the cosmos were made, Law made a beeline for Sawyer. “So I hear Eve Abbott is back in town.”

Jake whistled, drawing Sawyer’s attention. His eyebrows were slightly raised, which for Jake was the equivalent of the shocked-face emoji.

“What’s got Maya so worked up?” Sawyer countered. He needed to divert Law from the topic of Eve’s surprise reappearance.

“So I hear Eve Abbott is back in town,” Law said again, undeterred, and Jake snorted.

Sawyer rolled his eyes. “And?”

“What is she doing here? How long is she staying?”

“Why are you asking me?”

“Because you were basically Mr. Eve Abbott for a while there.”

“When I was a teenager!” Dammit. His protest had been too vehement. This was the dark side of the bromance, of having people in your life who knew your shit. You couldn’t be selective about what shit they knew. He started over. “I haven’t spoken to Eve Abbott in ten years. I don’t know what she’s doing here, but it probably has something to do with Lucille’s death.”

“Maybe she’s the executor of the estate,” Law said.

“Maybe.” Sawyer became extremely interested in a baseball game playing on a TV above the bar.

“Maybe she inherited the Mermaid.”

“Maybe.” Wow, a double play by…whatever team that was.

“Maybe who inherited the Mermaid?” Maya slid over from her spot at the other end of the bar.

“Eve Abbott.” Law wordlessly refilled Maya’s wineglass. “She’s back in town.”

“She is? Oh my God! But of course she is, with Lucille having passed.” Maya turned thoughtful. “Hmm. If Eve’s inherited the inn, I wonder if—”

“Whatever you’re thinking, don’t,” Law said.

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“You have your plotting face on. You’ll suck Eve into whatever it is you’re plotting against me.”

“I’m not plotting against you, Benjamin. I know it’s hard for you to understand, but not everything is about you.” She turned to Sawyer and Jake. “Anyway, Eve Abbott is back! I always liked her back in the day.”
