- About the Author
She started to climb out, but he stopped her progress with a hand on her arm. “Evie.”
“Yeah?”
God. He didn’t even know what he wanted to say. And he was so tired. So he settled for ripping off Clara’s line from earlier. “Thank you for everything.”
She smiled—a big, incandescent, guileless smile. He wasn’t sure if it made him feel better or worse.
When they got back to the room, Sawyer flipped through the TV channels until he found an underwater documentary. “It’s not The Little Mermaid, but it will have to do.” He grabbed one of the takeout boxes. “Why don’t you shower first?”
When Eve emerged from the bathroom a few minutes later, he was asleep in a chair. Poor guy. She laid a hand on his shoulder. “Sawyer.”
He blinked his eyes open. “Oh, man. I am wrecked.”
She tugged his arm to get him on his feet and pointed him toward the nearest of the two beds.
He flopped down on his stomach. “Give me two minutes, and we’ll work on our numbers some more.” His voice was muffled by the pillow his face was mashed into.
“Nope. Time for sleep.” She picked up his backpack and set it next to him. “Put on something dry first, though.”
“Uhhh.” He rolled over. It looked like a huge effort. “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be sorry. You’ve had quite a day. I’m tired, too.” She hadn’t hauled as many boxes as he had, or been through nearly the same emotional wringer, but she was beat. “I’m going to go brush my teeth and hit the sack as well.”
When she reemerged from the bathroom, he was under the covers breathing deeply. She paused for a moment. There were two beds in the room. They had been sleeping together—frequently and enthusiastically—but they’d never slept together.
Because they weren’t together. Sleeping in the same bed was something you did next to your boyfriend, not your friend with benefits.
She moved around the room quietly putting a few things in order before slipping into the other bed and turning out the light.
“Evie?”
She’d thought he was asleep. “Hmm?”
“Will you sleep with me?”
Oh boy.
He scooched to the far side of his bed and held back the covers.
Well, crap. How could she say no after this day? Worse, she didn’t want to say no. She slid in next to him. “This is a bad idea.”
He tucked her against him, sighing as he spooned her against his chest. “I know.”
When Eve awoke the next morning, her first thought was that she was so cozy. It should probably be illegal to feel this cozy.
But then she realized why she was feeling so cozy. She was spooned up against Sawyer’s chest. She felt warm and safe.
But only for a moment.
