- About the Author
Maya emerged from her bedroom just as Eve found the note on her phone—and screamed.
“What?” Maya rushed over. “What’s the matter?”
Eve couldn’t breathe as the entire New Year’s eve conversation crash-landed into her consciousness.
She turned her phone around and showed Maya the note. Dear Ebe you told Sayer u want him to go down on u [just so youo know happy new yer—Eve lol youself
This was why she had that random, weird—weird but hot—picture of Sawyer from New Year’s eve. She’d never really understood why he’d sent her a selfie that night.
Maya shook the phone at her. “What. Is. This.”
“I got drunk at New Year’s and called Sawyer and told him I wanted him to go down on me and apparently I thought I might forget it—which I did until this very moment—so I wrote myself a note for what reason I don’t really know, maybe so I could try to do some damage control, but I saved it in my notes and I was just getting my phone out to make a list and I found this and now I am going to die.”
Maya did not look as horror-struck as Eve thought she should be. In fact her face went from concerned to amused in the blink of an eye, and she cracked up. “That was the best run-on sentence I’ve ever heard.”
“Don’t laugh!” Eve buried her face in her hands. “New Year’s was six weeks ago! I’ve seen him so many times since then, and he hasn’t said anything!”
“That’s because Sawyer Collins is a gentleman.”
“Oh my God!” Eve paused to let another memory surface. “I was getting my hair done at Curl Up and Dye last week, and Sawyer came in to ask CJ about her mom. Remember how Carol Senior had her second hip replaced in January?” Maya nodded. “Sawyer and CJ seemed to have this ongoing inside joke—”
“You know, I think that’s what makes Sawyer such a good cop,” Maya interrupted. “He has these little schticks with people. He knows stuff about everyone’s lives—I mean, just the fact that he was popping in to check on Carol to begin with, you know? It’s not like—”
“Will you let me finish my mortifying story of humiliation?”
Maya clapped her hands excitedly. “Yes! Yes, I will!”
“Okay, so she’s razzing him about his beard, and he’s protesting that he’s keeping it. He was talking to her, but he was looking at me—looking at me kind of funny.”
“Funny how?”
“I don’t know. Funny intense?”
“Yeah, he gets the severe scolding face sometimes.” Maya started trying to imitate the face.
“Do you want to hear this or not?”
Maya made a lip-zipping gesture.
