- About the Author
When the applause died down, Medea bounded over to them.
“You were fantastic.” Sawyer swept Clara into a hug, heedless of the “blood” all over her costume. “In a totally terrifying way.”
He caught Eve’s eye over Clara’s shoulder and grinned. She smiled back. His pride was contagious.
“You were great, Clara,” she said when Sawyer had let her go.
“Hey, Eve! Thanks! I haven’t seen you lately—I’ve been working a million shifts at the store. But I wanted to ask you if you think I should apply to live in one of the campus residences, or if I should look for an apartment. Everything is so expensive in Toronto, it’s hard to know what to do. Where did you live when you went to school?”
Sawyer was gesturing behind his sister’s head, but Eve couldn’t interpret his meaning.
“I lived at home through university to save money, so I’m not going to be much help in that department,” she said, keeping one eye on Sawyer. “But why don’t you go have a look around? There used to be a campus housing service that posted apartment listings.” Sawyer started making slashing gestures with his hand across his neck. He clearly didn’t like the idea of her living off campus. “Or…” He nodded vehemently. “You can tour the various residences, can’t you? You should go check them out.” Sawyer was now smiling and nodding exaggeratedly and making a keep-going motion with his hand. She pressed her lips together so as not to smile. “I think it would be fun to live right on campus.” That earned her an exaggerated thumbs-up.
“Maybe we could go and check out a couple of them, Sawyer?” She turned to Eve. “We’re going to Toronto next weekend.”
“They’re going to Toronto next weekend because Miss Clara won a national essay contest, and she’s been invited to be on some smarty-pants TV show to talk about it,” Law said.
It was cute the way Law exuded as much pride in Clara’s accomplishments as Sawyer. These Moonflower Bayers could get all up in your business, but they stuck together.
“That’s great,” Eve said, and she meant it.
“So can we go early, Sawyer? I’m doing fine in all my classes, so I don’t think skipping out on a Friday for something like this is that big of a deal.”
“I wish we could, but Olivia’s going to be out of town, so I’m on seven to eleven on Friday. Maybe we can do it another time?”
“I could take you,” Eve’s mouth said. Her brain kicked in belatedly, and she was just about to overrule her mouth when Clara’s eyes lit up. She glanced at Sawyer to see if they were still playing charades. He was looking at her skeptically.
