Young Master Liu was quiet for most of the ride, leaning his head on the window. He Peilin almost wanted to tell him to just get some rest, and then once he was asleep, he would quietly drive him in the opposite direction, take him someplace safe, use the funds that he’d been pouring into He Peilin’s account for the last two months to make a comfortable life for the two of them. There was plenty of money for that.

But the young master wouldn’t be happy if he did that. He had his plans and he was determined to stick to them. He Peilin whisking him away to what he thought was a better life would be nothing short of betrayal in the young master’s eyes. And what kind of rescue would it be if the young master was miserable the whole time? Even if He Peilin didn’t like it, this was what the young master wanted, and if it was what the young master wanted, the young master would get it.

He pulled up next to their destination and shut the car off.

Be professional, He Peilin.

He got out of the car and went around to the other side to open the door for the young master, who needed assistance again as he climbed out.

“Thank you, Driver He.”

He Peilin felt his throat clog. “Young Master Liu—”

“You’ve been a good employee, and you’ve been a good friend. I’m glad I got to know you.” The young master reached forward and pulled He Peilin into a hug. He Peilin’s hands hovered over the young master before he returned the gesture. His eyes burned.

“It has been an honor serving you, Young Master Liu.”

“Just Xiaokai now is fine,” said the young master. “I wish you good health.”

It was just going to end like this?

“I’ll wait for you,” said He Peilin. “When you’re ready, I’ll return.”

The young master gave a light laugh. “You don’t need to do that.”

“I would still like to. If you ever want me at your side again, I’ll return.”

The young master looked away, toward the building to their right, his gaze contemplative. Then he said, “I understand. But until then, please enjoy life to its fullest. Don’t waste it just waiting for me.”

“Yes, sir.”

“And no need to speak to me so politely anymore.” He pulled He Peilin into another hug, took a deep breath, and nodded. “Well then,” he said, and he turned around, and he walked away.

He Peilin got back into the car.

“HE WON’T STAY upset forever.” Xingyu dropped a hand onto Weiran’s shoulder, squeezed. “He’ll come back.”
