- ABOUT THE AUTHORS
His eyes moistened as he turned to David. His voice was just above a whisper now. “Hey, the doctor also said . . .”
Jimmy paused and it was all Susan could do not to fill in the silence. But she didn’t.
“No more wrestling.”
“What?” David said, his voice like a child’s. “Ever?”
“I’m so sorry, sweetheart,” Susan whispered.
“God got you through this,” Jimmy said. “That’s not a little thing. I don’t think we should take that for granted.”
Susan leaned over and kissed David again. He was near tears. With a trembling voice she said, “I’m just so glad you’re okay.”
She was so focused on David and his struggle with the news they had given that she didn’t realize Nate had moved closer. She glanced behind her and realized he had started recording them.
“This is so good, you guys,” Nate said. “Can we just go back a few sentences and let me get that on here?”
“What?” Susan said.
“Just a few,” Nate said. “Kiss him on the forehead again if you can and I’ll get it.”
“Dude, come on,” David said. He waved a hand at Nate to get him to stop.
“Oh yeah,” Nate said, catching himself as if he realized he was intruding on a private moment. “But I just thought it was magic. No one needs to see it. We’re good.” He smiled, acting as if everybody recorded the most intimate moments of their lives.
“Dad, can you get Mr. Spielberg to leave the building?”
“No, I promise, no more recording. I’m good.”
Susan stood and put a hand on Nate’s shoulder. “I think we just need a little alone time. You understand.”
“I just thought the whole thing was so touching. It’s a compliment for me to want to shoot this. You know that, right, David?”
“Nate,” David said. “I love you, man. But go home.”
Nate put his phone in his pocket. “Wait, what about the pasta?”
Jimmy prepped a bowl of pasta for Nate and walked to the lobby with him. When he found out that Nate had been dropped off at the hospital and didn’t have a ride, he waved him to the parking lot and drove him home. Nate ate the pasta on the way because he said he didn’t like it when it got cold.
Nate’s house was twenty minutes away, and as they drove, Jimmy said, “You know, even though it can be a little much at times, the way you see the world through the camera is a real gift.”
“That’s not what David thinks.”
“Sure he does. It’s just that you have to be more sensitive. You know, get permission before you shoot the details of a person’s life.”
