  42. ABOUT THE AUTHORS

The voices of Sam and Justin echoed off the rocks as they rhythmically chanted, “David! David!”

One more deep breath. He took five running steps, launched from the edge of the cliff with his arms above his head, and felt nothing but air beneath him. His arms windmilled, but he managed to keep his feet down. The water rushed up at him and he hit with a splash and plunged below the surface.

Nate watched David’s descent in the monitor and knew he had something special. Sam and Justin reacted to David’s contact with the water, cringing.

“Nice,” Nate said. “Guys, check this out. This is sick. Oh, that is buttery smooth right there. Tell me that is not the best shot I’ve ever gotten.”

Sam and Justin leaned in, admiring the camera work.

“I’m about it,” Nate said, slapping their hands in victory. “You know what I mean?”

As David swam to the edge and made his way toward them, Nate replayed the jump, catching a subtle way to make the next shot better. When David arrived, he said, “Hey, that was pretty good. But the next one could be better, so let’s get up there and do it again. Just do a flip or—”

David put a hand on his shoulder. “I’ll start taking your directions when you actually get in the water.”

“Dude, I’m the cameraman. I can’t get wet!”

“How much was the drone?” Sam said.

“Millie here was eight hundred bucks but I still owe five hundred.”

“Millie?” Justin said.

“Millennium Falcon,” David said.

“You’re kidding,” Justin said.

David gave a smirk. “I’m not.”

“Dude, you can make five hundred bucks at the speech competition at school.”

“I’m a video blogger. I don’t do live speeches to impress small crowds.”

“You don’t do speeches to impress any crowds, actually,” Sam said.

“Dude, I’m producing impressive videos for a targeted online audience.”

“The ladies?” Justin said.

“I never said that,” Nate said. “But yes. All right, look. This next one’s got to go viral, okay? So I need somebody to do a belly flop off the cliff and I need it to look painful. David, how about you?”

“No, no thank you.”

“Don’t be a diva. Just get up and do it.”

“Nate, I’m already starting to get a headache. How about you get a shot of all three of us jumping at the same time? How’s that sound?”

“All right,” Nate said. “That’ll work. Let’s do it. Get back over there. I’ll get Millie all situated.”
