- ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Jimmy glanced at Susan. Then, calmly, he leaned down to the table. “You mean your birth parents?”
David nodded.
“Well, your dad has the same smile as you. And your mom has green eyes. So I would say the answer is yes.”
David closed his eyes. What was he thinking? Jimmy put a hand on Susan’s arm and they both held their breath and wondered what was coming next.
“Are you ready to order?” the server said, snapping them out of their reverie.
David sat up straight. “Chicken fingers and fries for me.”
Susan and Jimmy ordered and the server took their menus. When she left, David said, “Can I go see her? Would that be okay?”
Susan put her hands on the table and smiled. “Sweetie, if you were to meet her, what would you want to say?”
Without hesitation he said, “I would just say, ‘Hi, my name is David.’”
“That sounds like a great thing to say,” Susan said. “And the answer is yes, you can reach out to her when you’re older. If she agrees, the two of you can meet.”
David relaxed and switched the conversation to a funny story Nate had told him. Their meals came and as they ate, Jimmy asked what David had learned in Sunday school. It was a story about Jesus healing a man who couldn’t move on his own.
“So his friends brought him to this house where Jesus was,” David said, animated. “And it was so crowded in there, the man’s friends climbed up on the roof and made a hole and let the man down. Can you imagine all the noise and the stuff falling down around them?”
“That man sure had some good friends, didn’t he?” Jimmy said.
“Yeah, I want to be like that to somebody.”
Jimmy glanced at Susan and smiled.
As they got in the car and David buckled in the back seat, Jimmy heard his little voice. “Do you have a picture of them?”
Jimmy glanced at Susan.
“Yes, it’s at home,” Susan said.
“Can I see it?”
“Sure,” Jimmy said.
As soon as they pulled into the driveway, David went to his room and put his Bible and Sunday school papers away. Jimmy followed Susan into their bedroom and she handed him the picture from the envelope she kept in her nightstand.
“You want to show him?” Jimmy said.
“I think it’ll be good for you to,” she said.
Jimmy studied the Polaroid photo. Brian wore a hooded sweatshirt and had his arm around Melissa. She had long brown hair. They were both smiling.
Jimmy walked into David’s room and found him at his desk. He placed the photo in front of him and David leaned closer, careful not to touch it. He stared at the faces, his head moving left to right, then back again.
Finally he looked up at Jimmy. “Can I hold it?”
“Sure.”
