- EPILOGUE
“You must immerse yourself in the language at every opportunity when you’re not here,” Giancarlo told him. “The more you hear it spoken, the more you try to speak it yourself, the more it will register in your brain, even if at first you don’t comprehend what is being said. This will require dedication and discipline and a little imagination. I have some tapes I can give you, some books to look at, but you must also look elsewhere, perhaps at the library. See what they have. Language tapes, Italian movies, music, whatever, it doesn’t matter, just so long as they are speaking Italian. As a child you learned English because every corner of your world was saturated with it. If you want to learn Italian, you’ll have to do the very same thing. Can you do all this?”
“I don’t know,” Carter confessed after a moment’s pause. “I really don’t. But I know that I have to try. And I will give it my best, everything that I have. I can promise you that.”
Giancarlo sat back and folded his arms. “In that case, Quinn, Carter Quinn, I suppose I have no choice but to take you at your word.”
Carter smiled. “So, what comes next?” he said.
“You come back on Wednesday,” said Giancarlo. “And then we will begin.”

CHAPTER 8
Carter dug his toes into the sand and gazed out at the ocean. It was a warm, lazy Sunday, and he was sitting alone on Narragansett Beach. He wouldn’t be alone for long, of that he felt reasonably certain. This being Rhode Island, it was inevitable that he would, at some point that afternoon, encounter at least one friend or acquaintance strolling by along the shore. Rhode Islanders loved the ocean, and Narragansett Beach was a port of call when summer came. It was not quite officially summer, of course—the solstice was still a week away—but you could not tell that to the beachgoers who had flocked to the shore that day to soak up the sunshine. It had been a cool, damp spring, as springs generally were in southern New England, and the advent of some warm, dry weather was all it took to lure people to the beach.
