  60. EPILOGUE

“Actually, I’ve been hoping for more than one,” his friend replied. “But that’s just me.”

“Whatever,” sighed Carter in exasperation. “Anyway, so there you are.You stop and you look back at her and your eyes meet for a second, and all of a sudden all these possibilities start running through your head. It’s like you can see your whole life opening up ahead of you, and you think maybe you should just go after her, just get on that bus and see where it takes you. But before you can make a move, the bus drives away or the car passes or you lose her in the crowd, and it’s over forever. Happens all the time, right? So you move on and just forget about it, and you never know what could have been.Well, this time, I don’t want to forget about it and just move on. I wanna get on that bus. I want to know what could be. And that’s why I’ve been studying Italian, because when I get to Italy, I want to know for sure.”

“I can see that,” said Jimmy, scrunching up his chin, “except you’re not getting on a bus. You’re getting on a plane.”

“Plane, bus, makes no difference.”

“It does when you’re flying halfway around the world to a place you’ve never been, hoping that she’s the one.”

“Come on,” said Carter. “Are you going to tell me that it’s never happened to you, that you’ve never felt the same way at least once?”

Jimmy gave a sigh and shook his head.

“Let me tell you something, Quinnie,” he replied. “There are some things in life that you just can’t have, no matter how good they look and how bad you want them, or think you need them. That’s just the way it is. So I don’t worry about those things. If I can’t have them—if that bus you’re talking about pulls out of town—then hey, I just stop and take a look around to see what else there is right here next to me that maybe I’ve been overlooking. You know, when that bus goes, it usually leaves something pretty good behind. You just gotta keep your eyes open. That’s my philosophy.”

“Sure, you’re all talk now,” chuckled Carter. “But watch, someday it will happen to you. And then you’ll be coming to me for Italian lessons.”

“Yeah?” said Jimmy, rolling his eyes. “Well why don’t you start right now by telling me how to say ‘shut up and do your next set of benches’ in Italian?”

Carter gave a laugh, then he reached up and lifted the bar.
