“Because he told me so.”
Olivia’s jaw dropped. “What?”
“Well, he didn’t tell me directly,” Sadie amended. “But I overheard him tell Jack, so, really, same thing.”
Olivia felt like she’d entered an alternate universe. “When? What did he say?”
“It was last fall, at the monthly warehouse party. November, I think? I was hiding in that storage room behind the restrooms, trying to avoid that fire play guy.”
“Kevin,” Amanda remembered. “Yeah, he was creepy.”
“Right?” Sadie grimaced. “He wanted to burn my pubic off.”
“Ugh,” Rebecca said. “And also, ow.”
“Hello?” Olivia waved a hand. “Can we focus, here?”
“Sorry, sorry. Cade and Jack were in the men’s room, and there must be a vent in there that connects the two rooms, because you can hear everything. It’s like having a hidden microphone next to the urinals.”
Rebecca wrinkled her nose. “Gross.”
“Mostly, but between the pissing and the handwashing, I heard Cade say that he was trying to respect your relationship with Kyle, but that if you weren’t involved, he’d be on you like…like…” She flapped a hand. “Quick, I need a metaphor.”
“Simile,” Rebecca said.
“What?”
“Saying something is like something else is a simile, not a metaphor,” Rebecca explained.
Sadie stared at her. “Are you kidding me right now?”
“He’d be on you like something that would be on something else aggressively and fast,” Amanda put in.
“That.” Sadie nodded and turned back to Olivia. “So I think it’s safe to say he has feelings for you.”
“Oh.” Olivia eased back against the booth, her drink forgotten in front of her, and tried to digest this new information.
“I think you broke her,” Rebecca told Sadie.
“I’m not broken,” Olivia said absently. “I’m processing.”
“Hopefully about jumping that stick,” Sadie said, then turned to Rebecca. “It was good, right?”
“You are out of control,” Amanda admonished.
“What? She should have all the information available so she can make an informed decision.”
“She’s fucked him, too,” Rebecca reminded her.
“Oh, right.” Sadie eyed Olivia with interest. “I forgot.”
“It was very good,” Olivia said before Sadie could ask.
“There you go, then,” Sadie said, and sat back with a smug smile.
“You okay, sweetie?” Amanda asked quietly.
“I’m just grappling with the fact that I could’ve been with Cade all this time.”
“Yeah, that’s a kick in the pants,” Sadie agreed.
Olivia sat quietly, and the others fell silent, too. She was aware of Sadie sliding out of the booth, and after a hushed conversation with Amanda, Rebecca following, but they didn’t speak to her as they left. That was fine with Olivia. She had enough to think about.
