1 For the soles of her feet a light, springy board is used; her ankles are tied about six inches to a foot apart; if there is a rail at the bottom of your bed, they may be bound to this; also good is to put her on her back, bound, on the floor, and tie her ankles over a chair, placed on its side; in both cases it is desirable if her head is lower than her feet; this induces a feeling of helplessness and makes the beating seem more painful; this mode of punishment, incidentally, is mild slave discipline, sharp and humiliating enough to be effective, yet not as serious as a full-scale application of the slave whip; it is excellent for punishing small, unintentional infractions, such as, say, stumbling in the master’s presence, spilling wine, etc. This punishment, incidentally, is normally administered by one slave girl to another; they hate one another and enjoy striking one another; pettiness, jealousy, mutual distrust, etc., is encouraged in slave girls; it makes them easier to control; the master, after having given his orders, leaves the room; he does not even watch. This is a further insult to the punished girl. When he returns, she looks up at him, then looks away. She cannot look into his eyes. She has been beaten. He unties her. She finds it difficult to walk. He forces her to do so. She falls to her knees, crawling to him for mercy. He carries her to his bed and rapes her. She is a truly punished slave. (Slave rape is, of course, common. Slaves are unimportant; commonly the master inflicts slave rape on his girl, but, if she should be caught in the street, or in the alleys, by ruffians, they too might, almost with impunity, rape her. Furthermore, even on errands, she is not out of danger. A shopkeeper may even order her to his back room; similarly she is much at the mercy of soldiers and magistrates; the penalty for raping a slave is nothing or negligible, sometimes the tiniest coin given to the master. Many masters send their girls forth only if they are fastened in the steel belt, preventing their penetration. The extremely short garment of the female slave, and the fact absolutely nothing is permitted to be worn under it, invite her rape. It distracts attention from free women, who are thus relatively safe from assault. Interestingly, many slave girls respond excitingly to their rapes; being an owned girl, helpless, locked in a collar, no reputation to protect, fully aware of the power and beauty of male animals, they sometimes, it is claimed, provoke their own rapes, particularly in the presence of a male that excites them. No one thinks the less of a slave girl for begging to be raped; that is all they are, slaves. They are not permitted pride or inhibitions; they must be complete, willing, eager female animals. Once they are broken to the collar, they become eager for sex; indeed, they wish it frequently and are miserable when denied; in selling a girl she is often, prior to her sale, deprived of sex for several days; then, when sent to the block, she is often whimpering and moaning for a master; this is very different from the “free woman,” but, it is noted that the “free woman,” once reduced to absolute bondage, becomes, almost overnight, as eager and wanton as the most despicable of bred slaves.)
