Corvus is silent for so long that I’m not sure he’s ever going to answer.
“I don’t know,” he says, finally. “But we did our best.”
I sigh and take another long swig. I want to drink more, or crack a joke, or do something to break this silence. But instead I set the bottle aside, lay my head against my brother’s shoulder, and soak in the quiet.
We sit for a long while, him staring out at the rolling sea, me staring up at the stars that are out of my reach—for now. I don’t know what comes next, but I do know that right now there’s a celebration raging on a world that wouldn’t exist without us, and whatever the future brings, we’ll face it together. However long this peace may last, that’s enough for me.
The story continues in…

Many thanks to:
My agent, Emmanuelle Morgen, who was enthusiastic about Fortuna from the very start and helped bring the heart of the story to the forefront. Thanks as well to Sanaa Ali-Virani for the insightful feedback, and the rest of the team at Stonesong.
My editor, Bradley Englert, who made the initial brilliant suggestion to add Corvus’s POV and never stopped pushing for this to be the best book it could be; Lisa Marie Pompilio for the incredible cover design; and the rest of the ever-amazing Orbit team for all of their hard work.
Michelle Chaves, for giving incisive notes and talking me through my first-draft panic.
And, of course, my family. I love you all and am so grateful to have you in my life. Gramma: Thank you for always thinking of me despite the distance between us. Mama and Papa: Thank you for your constant support and excitement for my work. I promise that one day I’ll write a book featuring parental figures who aren’t terrible and/or dead! And lastly, Todd and Lucas: No matter how far apart we end up, I know we’ll always find our way back together. This one’s for you.
