Sweaty and dishevelled, Cora had stood and pulled on her pants. Covered her skin with a bra and shirt. Given her a smile. Then slid out of the room. Before the door had closed, she’d turned. “Lunch tomorrow?”

Frazer had nodded, naked and no longer feeling smooth. “Okay.”

And now she was lying on her couch at home, wondering what the hell she’d gotten herself into.

“Boys?” Frazer sat up, leaning on her elbows. She peered through the glass of her aquarium at the end of the couch. “Am I an idiot?”

Two of the fish darted behind a piece of coral and didn’t reappear.

“I’ll take that as a yes.”

She dropped back down with a groan. She and Cora. Friends. Who had sex. When one of them was married.

This was not the person Frazer had ever thought she would be. Could she claim she was innocent in this, that the blame lay with Cora? Frazer wasn’t the married one, after all.

No.

Frazer knew what she was doing. And it had to end.

It was ludicrous what Cora had asked. Why had Frazer agreed to it? But all Frazer had been aware of in that moment was the pleading in Cora’s voice, the lips so close to a place Frazer had felt thrumming with need.

This couldn’t continue. Maybe she’d agreed to it when Cora was kneeling in front of her, but she shouldn’t have.

Never should Frazer have agreed to that.

She would tell her tomorrow. At lunch, she would tell Cora that this was insane, she had to sort out whatever was going on with her without using Frazer.

Though was Frazer really being used? She knew what this was. She knew Cora was married. She was getting sex out of it, and friendship.

It was a terrible thing to do to Alec.

Frazer pulled a cushion over her head and groaned into it loudly.

Tomorrow.

Tomorrow she would tell Cora it couldn’t continue.

So it was tomorrow. All morning, Frazer went through prenatal exam after prenatal exam. Her mind was half there and half on what she would say to Cora.

Also, somehow, though it was mathematically impossible, her mind was half on the training program they were starting next week. Soon they’d have more mentors, and that meant more clients. The clients that had a social worker as their mentor would have Frazer as a midwife, and the ones that had a midwife would have Cora as their social worker. Later, that would have to change, but for now, their numbers were small and it would work.

“All is going just fine here, Erin.” Frazer snapped her gloves off and dropped them in the bin.

The relief on the face of the woman on the examination table was palpable. “Yeah? Because those pains I was having…”
