  50. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

The drive was made in silence, and they’d just been seated at a nice booth in the back of the comfortable sports bar, which had mounted televisions everywhere showing different sporting games, when Pippa appeared.

“Hi.” She sat next to Brigid. “We were already on the way to see Angus when you called. I’m starving.” The brunette’s hair fell in natural waves to her shoulders, and her eyes sparkled. She’d dressed in jeans, flowy shirt, and denim jacket.

“How are you?” Nari asked.

“Great,” Pippa said. “Not having a cult chasing me has really eased my anxiety.” Her soft chuckle was contagious. “I still don’t love crowds or loud places, but who does?”

It was nice to see the woman out and about. They ordered drinks, wine for everyone but Brigid. She ordered a hot chocolate. Might as well splurge.

“So,” Nari said, sipping a rich-looking merlot. “No shoptalk. Only girl talk.”

“All right.” Brigid jumped right in. “What’s going on with you and Angus?”

Nari coughed delicately. “I meant you and Raider.”

“Too late. You first,” Brigid said, sipping her chocolate and letting it warm her from the inside out.

Nari rolled her eyes. “Nothing is going on. He doesn’t like me being foisted on him by HDD, and he doesn’t like psychiatrists at all. Plus, he’s just a grumpy bastard in general.”

“But a cute one. Sexy and growly,” Dana said, taking a sip of her chardonnay.

Nari blushed a little. “Well, yeah. But not sexy enough to get beyond the grumpiness.”

They’d see about that. Brigid faced Dana. “And you and Wolfe?”

“Just friends.” The reporter took a healthy drink of her old-fashioned. “Don’t get me wrong. That man is fine to look at, but he has some serious issues, and I’m busy with my own right now. Plus, he laid it out there that we’re just friends, and I’ve never found it a good use of time to change somebody else’s mind.”

Wow, she sounded balanced. “That’s just smart,” Brigid murmured. But they’d make such a nice couple, and both deserved to be happy. She’d never acted as a matchmaker before, but why the heck not? Once things slowed down.

“Pippa?” Nari asked. “How’s life shacking up with the super-sexy Malcolm West?”

Pippa all but beamed with happiness. “It’s awesome. I mean, he leaves his socks everywhere and it does drive me a little nutty, but he makes up for it in other ways.”
