She shrugged, her expression bored. “We’ll see.” She reached over and gripped the edge of his laptop screen, neatly pivoting his computer so that it faced her. He noticed how elegant her hands were: long, pale fingers, with nails painted in the palest pink. “Why did you say that Harry Owen had really screwed himself? Did you find something?” She typed a command, her fingers skimming the keys with the grace of a dragonfly.
He leaned toward her. “He’s having an affair.”
She threw him an amused look. “Welcome to the twenty-first century, AggroBoy.”
He flushed. “Read the emails I just loaded.”
She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and scanned the emails. “Did you realize that his lover will be in Halifax tomorrow?”
He squinted at the date in the email and then at the calendar on his screen. “Oh, yeah.”
“Do you know what this means?”
He eyed the line of ketchup on his French fry. “He’s going to get laid.” He felt an erection coming on.
She plucked the fry from his hand. “What it means is that we are officially in business.” She delicately bit off the end of the fry. A drop of ketchup smudged the tip of her finger. It was startlingly red against her skin. She slid her finger between her lips and licked it, locking her gaze with his.
His brain was having difficulty processing the implications of what she said when it was bombarded with the suggestiveness of what she just did. It was as if she had taken his chair and spun it in circles until he was so dizzy that the only thing he could focus on was this strange mutant version of the hacker Tr0lz. He was supposed to be an awkward nerd. Not…this.
“Do I need to spell it out for you?” She closed the lid of his laptop and leaned toward him. “Harry’s lover is a United States Captain. Just imagine the cred we would get if we took his lover out as part of our exploit.”
“What? Are you crazy?”
She threw a look around the food court. “Keep your voice down.”
He leaned toward her. “What the hell are you suggesting?”
“I’ll tell you somewhere more private.” She eyed his sweat-soaked clothing with disdain. “Where are you staying?”
He threw a glance over his shoulder. “Nowhere.”
“Fine. You can come to my place until we finish the job.”
He grabbed his burger from the wrapper and was about to finish it off when he noticed she was staring at him. He held it out to her. “Want some…partner?”
“No.” She made a moue of disgust. “I’m vegan.” She stood. “Let’s go.”
He shoved the rest of the burger in his mouth while pushing his laptop into his backpack.
