The dark shape of a container ship surged past McNabs Island.
* * *
He stood in front of the airport bathroom stall. “Aiden. It’s Harry Owen.”
The door slowly opened.
And Harry saw the face of his tormentor for the first time.
But it wasn’t the first time.
Despite the swollen nose, Harry recognized that face.
Tyson Green’s eyes had always been distinctive: thickly lashed, changing from blue to green and back again. They drew people in. Made them want to trust him.
Harry had almost fallen for Tyson’s pleas of ignorance when he was arrested for the hack into the Public Prosecutions’ database of criminal files. But the trauma that he had caused by publishing online the details of the assaults could not be dismissed. Harry had provided damning evidence.
And Tyson had been punished to the full extent of the law.
“Tyson.”
“My name is Aiden now.” His blackmailer stepped out of the washroom stall. He had a backpack slung over one shoulder. His clothes were black, filthy. Harry recognized the look: Leah had worn similar garb. He fought his instinct to wrap his hands around the man’s throat.
Aiden’s green gaze mocked him. “But you still go by Mr. Owen. Or should I say the Honorable Mr. Owen?”
“Why are you doing this?” He fought to keep his voice neutral.
“Don’t you know already?” Aiden’s eyes narrowed. “Or have you conveniently forgotten?”
“I haven’t forgotten anything, Aiden.”
“Neither have I.” He grinned. “And now your family won’t, either.”
The rage pushed for release. He wanted to wrap his hands around Aiden’s neck. Think of the little boy. Yellow rubber boots. He took a deep breath. “I’ve got your BitCoin ready to be transferred. But I need to know what you were working on with Tr0lz.”
“That’s not part of the deal.”
“Then I’m going to cancel the transfer.” Harry pulled out his phone and flicked the screen. The site where he had purchased the BitCoin with police funds loaded, the BitCoin ready to be sent to Aiden.
Aiden’s eyes darted to the phone. “That’s not the deal. I have your laptop.”
“I need to know, Aiden.”
Aiden’s eyes scanned the washroom behind Harry. “You’ve set me up.”
Shit. “No. It’s just you and me. I promise.”
Aiden shook his head. “You’re lying. You’ve set me up, you bastard!”
He snatched Harry’s phone from his hand and sprinted out of the washroom.
Harry lunged after him.
He expected Aiden to run toward the doors, but instead he raced toward the luggage carousel.
Harry forced his legs to run harder, faster.
Aiden had almost reached the luggage carousel’s draft curtain, where the conveyor belt traveled through to the other side of the wall. If he got through that, who knew where he could go.
You aren’t going to let him get away this time, Harry.
