“Have you heard anything from Harry?” Kate kept her voice low.
She hoped that Aiden Boyne had been found, that the threat that had caught them all in its teeth had been extinguished.
Randall shook his head. “Nothing.”
“Listen, I’m telling you this as a friend, so you can’t use it against Leah in the Owen case—”
“Of course, Kate.” The way he said that—his gaze steady and his tone steadfast—made her feel foolish for cautioning him.
“—There’s a hacktivist named Matt who went to the apartment of another hacktivist named Tr0lz. He’s Aiden Boyne’s partner. Matt was trying to find out what the exploit was. He called me from the bathroom. He said the exploit had something to do with the Halifax Explosion.”
Randall sucked in his breath. “So it’s a shipping hack?”
“I think so.”
“Do the police know?”
“I told Detective Ellis. He’s going to the apartment to verify it, and he called the Coast Guard.” Kate exhaled. “He told me to stay away.”
A small smile lifted one side of Randall’s mouth. “He obviously knows your reputation.”
She threw him a reluctant smile. But her tone was serious. “Detective Ellis told me that Aiden had blackmailed Harry.”
“Yes.”
“If they were going to doxx him, why blackmail him? The files would be all over the Internet.”
“There were personal emails that would have caused serious harm to his career.”
“Oh. Poor Harry.” And Kate meant it. As much as she resented his inflexibility when she attempted to plead Frances Sloane’s case, the man and his father had been through hell over the past twenty-four hours.

Cooper had picked up Riley at the station after Lamond told him that he was conducting an interview of Joey Roberts in the soft interview room. They grabbed a pair of bulletproof vests from Cooper’s trunk, and sped to the apartment building.
Cooper buzzed the superintendent. “Police. It’s urgent.”
Within a minute, the superintendent ran down the hallway, tying her bathrobe en route, and let Cooper and Riley inside. When she saw the bulletproof vests, she blanched.
“What’s going on?”
“We need to secure this building. No one is to leave their apartments.” He studied the list of surnames by the security buzzer. “We are looking for a young male, possibly lives alone, would have a lot of computer gear.”
The superintendent frowned. “I don’t have anyone here like that.”
“What about a family with a teenage son?”
The superintendent eyed him. “No. Can’t think of anyone. It’s mainly young professional couples. In their twenties, who work downtown and are saving to buy a house.”
Tr0lz could be any one of them.
“Have any of the tenants sold drugs?” Ellis asked. “Or had regular deliveries of packages?”
The superintendent’s gaze shifted from openness to wariness. “We aren’t going to arrest you, Ms. …”
“Wilson,” she muttered.
