“I don’t know. I just met the guy this evening.” Detective Ellis’ counter argument was persuasive. Matt Leon seemed genuine, but he also wasn’t above breaking the law for his own perception of justice. “But he called me from Tr0lz’s bathroom to warn me. He also texted me Tr0lz’s address.”
“I’ll send a team to investigate. What’s the address?”
Kate read it out loud while Detective Ellis repeated it to someone over the police radio.
“Don’t go there yourself, Ms. Lange.”
“Can you also send a team to the waterfront?”
“I’ll alert the Coast Guard. Do you know which ships would be involved in this attack?”
“No. I have no idea.”
She realized that if Matt was creating a diversion, he had played his hand well. “Are you going to check out the airport?”
“We are fifteen minutes away from the airport with the Serious Incident Response Team to apprehend Aiden Boyne. We have it all under control, Ms. Lange.”
“Okay.”
“Stay away from the waterfront and the airport until the suspects are apprehended.”
A string of commands were fired over the radio. Ellis hung up the phone before she could respond.
“Did you tell the police that Matt called you?” Leah’s tone was accusing.
Kate glanced over at her client. Leah glared at her from the hospital bed. Her client’s sedation had obviously worn off.
“Yes. He said he was at Tr0lz’s.”
“Oh, no. Why did he go?”
“I don’t know why he went there. But he told me to call the police. He said that Tr0lz was planning Halifax Explosion version 2.0.”
Shock flickered across Leah’s face.
Kate leaned closer. “Do you know anything about that?”
* * *
“Leah, have you ever done any work with the Ports?” Aiden had asked one night when they lay tangled in her sheets.
She shook her head. “No, why?” Her finger traced a little circle over his heart.
“I heard that the shipping industry has the worst cyber security in the world.”
“Hmmm…maybe…” she murmured, planting little kisses on his shoulder.
“Don’t you think it would be cool if the Forum hacked into a container ship one night?”
She raised herself on an elbow. “Why would we do that?”
“Because they transport dangerous things like nuclear ingredients and stuff. That crap comes right into our harbor. But it’s all on the downlow. No one in Halifax knows anything about that.”
“Are they deliberately hurting anyone?”
“Not yet. But it’s just a matter of time.” He gazed at her, his expression open. Concerned.
“We can’t do anything until that happens, Aiden. The Forum is supposed to reveal wrongs, not cause trouble.”
“Why not prevent a wrong? Shouldn’t we do that, too? Let people know that our government is allowing scary stuff into our harbor just to make a buck?”
