She was aware of two pairs of eyes on her. Both were bloodshot. The young hacktivist sat in the back seat, so wired that he strained against his seat belt, his gaze exhausted. Eddie had settled into the passenger seat with his usual ease, but dark bags emphasized the redness in his eyes.
“What’s up, Ms. Lange?” Detective Ellis’ voice went from groggy to alert.
“I have critical information. But I must have your undertaking that this information will be considered as compliance with the immunity agreement for Leah Roberts.” She glanced at Joey’s anxious face in her rearview mirror. She had to handle this carefully. She didn’t want to implicate Joey in a crime before the police had evidence that he had committed one. “And the accomplice who removed the laptop.”
“So you are saying that the accomplice is not Aiden Boyne.”
“Correct.”
“Is it Joey Roberts?”
“Detective, you know I can’t answer any questions of that nature.” She gave Joey—who appeared to be holding his breath—a reassuring look in the mirror.
“Do you know the whereabouts of Joey Roberts?”
“Yes.” She could not evade that question. That truth would come out. “He’s in my car.”
“What is he doing there?”
“I offered him a drive home.”
Joey’s eyes were wide. Scared.
She cleared her throat. “Listen, Detective, time is of the essence. I have received reliable information that another cyber exploit might be committed by Aiden Boyne. And it is of a terrorist nature.”
“What kind of terrorism are we talking about?” Ellis asked, his voice tense.
She exhaled. “I don’t know. We—Eddie Bent and I—only know that it might affect the infrastructure of the city in some way.”
“Is it related to the hack of Harry Owen’s computer?”
“My source couldn’t say.”
“Who’s your source?”
Kate hesitated.
“Ms. Lange, you can’t invoke solicitor-client privilege when public safety is at risk.” Detective Ellis’ tone was curt.
Kate closed her eyes. She believed that Matt had told her everything he knew. If she revealed his whereabouts to the police, he would face serious charges.
Dammit.
And yet, maybe the police had uncovered evidence that would connect dots of which neither Matt nor Kate were aware.
She exhaled. “His name is Matt Leon.”
Joey hissed, “No!”
“Where can we find him?”
She gave Detective Ellis the name of Matt’s hotel and then hung up the phone.
“Shit, shit, shit.”
“You had to do that, Kate.” Eddie spoke softly.
She felt Joey’s eyes drill into the back of her head. “Joey,” she turned in her seat. “There are too many lives at risk.”
“So Matt’s and Leah’s lives don’t matter to you.”
“Of course they do. But this has gotten bigger than both of them. We can’t keep this to ourselves anymore. Think of your parents. What if they were killed because of this exploit?”
