They had never been recovered. The theft of them had robbed her of her dignity, her privacy, and her sense of safety.

And once again, she could lay the blame for that at Kenzie Sloane’s artistically tattooed feet.

The anger that Kate had buried in Venice surfaced.

Would she ever be free of this woman?

She sprang to her feet. Sleep was impossible. And staying in her bedroom, with Imogen’s box of belongings secreted in her closet, was impossible, as well.

She knew she should just go through the box. Rip off the bandage of her trauma, scour the festering pain, and examine the final remnants of a family that had been irrevocably damaged.

But couldn’t face it tonight.

She strode out to the landing, flicking on the light. One glance down the hallway confirmed that Finn had not returned for the night.

I hope you met a nice girl tonight, Finn. Someone who would replace Kenzie Sloane in his affections. For even though the tattoo artist had betrayed his trust, Kate wasn’t convinced that Finn was over her. There was something about Kenzie—her wildness, her passion, her daring—that left a certain kind of man helpless in her presence. John McNally had been one such victim. Kate was terrified that Finn was the next. And that Kenzie Sloane would once again succeed in stealing someone Kate loved.

You are becoming paranoid, Kate.

Her phone rang.

She hurried back into the bedroom and snatched it from the bedside table. It was a Florida number. “Kate Lange.”

“It’s Matt.” His voice was strained.

Kate’s heart sank at the sound of his voice. “Did you meet Aiden Boyne?”

“Yes. He had a knife. Like you said.”

“Did anyone get hurt?”

“No. He tried to steal Leah’s laptop. But we locked him out of my hotel room and he ran away.”

“So you still have the laptop?” A headache had started to form by Kate’s temple.

“Yes. But we didn’t find out his real name.” Matt’s voice was tense with frustration.

Back to square one. “Okay, Matt. But I need to collect the laptop ASAP.”

“Won’t the immunity deal be off if we can’t crack Aiden Boyne’s identity?”

“It might be for Leah. I’m going to try to trade the laptop for immunity for Joey.”

“Please, give me a little more time to see if I can find out who Aiden Boyne is,” he said, his voice low. “We can’t let this happen to Leah.”

“Leah understands the consequences of this. She wants to protect her brother.”

Kate had made a promise to her client that she would secure the laptop. And if she failed to get it, Leah would lose her one chance at redemption. “I’ll come to your hotel in half in an hour.”

Matt cleared his throat. “Could you bring something to glue a knife cut together?”
