It always reminded him of his high school chemistry lab. A long, steel table ran the length of the room. One wall contained lockers, stuffed full of lab coats, masks, evidence bags, bottles of chemicals, and God only knew what else.
Riley and Murphy leaned over an older-model computer network that had been set up on the bench. Riley glanced over her shoulder when she heard Cooper approach and smiled.
It was the first time he’d seen her smile. And it almost stopped him in his tracks. He hoped she didn’t see him check his stride.
If she did, she didn’t let on—or she didn’t care. “Murphy is a friggin’ genius.” She gave a thumbs up.
The computer analyst looked up from the screen, and winked. He had the open features and freckles of Howdy Doody but the analytic brain of Spock. “I know why Leah Roberts and Aiden Boyne broke into the Owen house,” he said. “Look at this.”
Cooper craned his neck to scan the computer monitor. It was filled with code. “What did you find?”
Murphy practically rubbed his hands together. “This computer was used as a host to spread a virus to Harry Owen’s computer. The suspects must have uploaded the virus with a flash drive onto this computer. Once Harry logged in to his parents’ computer network, the host computer transmitted the virus over the network to Harry’s. He would have no idea that the information was accessed.” Murphy shook his head. “It was a genius hack.”
“And what happened to the information when it was accessed?” Cooper had already guessed but had learned to never assume anything.
“It was downloaded to two IP addresses. One we believe was Leah Roberts’.”
“And the other must be Aiden Boyne’s,” Riley said. “Has your team made any headway in locating either of the laptops?”
Cooper shook his head. “Not yet. Leah Roberts believes that Aiden Boyne took her machine. And he’s still at large. But my money is on the younger brother. We’re searching for him right now.” Two missing laptops. Two missing men. So far, this case had been kicking Cooper in the butt.
Riley leaned against the computer desk. She had changed into a sleeveless shirt and jeans, and her clothing showed off her triathlete build nicely. Too nicely.
Cooper fixed his gaze on the computer screen. “So the million dollar question is why was it so important for Leah Roberts to risk her career to hack into Harry Owen’s computer?”
“She’s a computer security analyst hired by the Department of Public Safety…” Riley said. “Do you think she was stealing classified information?”
“You mean to sell on the Internet?”
“Maybe.”
“There’s a huge black market for that,” Murphy added.
