“If it means that we can get Joey off the hook, do it.” Her voice was weak yet a thread of determination kept it steady. “It’s my fault he’s in jeopardy. I’m not dragging my little brother into this.”
Treason for one, freedom for the other. Yet, Kate would do the same thing if she were in Leah’s shoes. “I’ll call Matt to let him know that we need the laptop ASAP. I’ll review the contents before we hand it over. Then we’ll have a better idea of what kind of case the Crown will make against you.”
Leah hesitated. “Could you…could you call Matt while you are here? So that I could talk to him?”
The need in Leah’s gaze was hard to refuse. But her client no longer operated in the same world as she had a day before. “Leah, I’m sorry. I can’t. It would violate the custody conditions.”
“Okay.” Tears glistened in her eyes. “Could you tell him ‘thank you’ for me? He must think I’m a monster.”
“I don’t think he does, Leah.” Should she tell Leah that she thought Matt still had feelings for her? No. It was none of her business, and she didn’t want to muddy the waters with the crosscurrents of unrequited love. “When I spoke to him, he said he knew that you would never have intended any harm to Mrs. Owen.”
“I didn’t.” Her client’s voice was thin with exhaustion.
“We all know that, Leah. Get some sleep. Hopefully, by morning we’ll have some better news.” She patted Leah’s arm. “I’ll see you in the morning.”
Kate stood, her legs heavy. The adrenaline that had propelled her to Leah’s room had been extinguished by fatigue. “I’ll take a look at Harry Owen’s files. If you think of anything—and I mean any detail that you think would be relevant to Aiden Boyne, Harry Owen, or his parents—tell your parents to call me ASAP.”
“I just remembered something.” Leah’s words were slurred. Kate leaned closer to hear. “Aiden had a pirate tattoo. On his arm. He said he’d been charged with hacking when he was younger.”
“Do you know if he was convicted?”
“I think he was.”
“I’ll give the Crown that information.” Finally, a possible break for her client.
“And tell Matt.”
“I will. Now get some rest.” Leah had been through a lot today. It was hard to believe that she had had surgery just fourteen hours before.
Kate walked through the ICU, her gaze straight ahead, but acutely aware of the people lying behind glass doors. At this hour of night, when the lights were turned down and the staff had completed their rounds, she felt as if she walked through a twilight zone of the unconscious.
