Torija sighed. “I told you, the Reaper and I had a lot of history to work out. Anyway, he said that he knew of your grandmother’s work within the paranormal community and that she could help us with information and planning for what comes next. The descendant issue and other things.”
“Okay, but how do we get back to Scotland? I was abducted here. I don’t have a passport or any official papers. You jumped out of the Dred castle window, so I don’t expect you have anything we could use, like money?”
“A vampire doesn’t need money. You’ve been eating, haven’t you?” Torija said firmly.
“Yes, and I feel terrible about it. You’re using your powers to steal.”
“I know you’re here to redeem me, Daisy, but it’s only a sandwich or two. Needs must.”
“Don’t forget the whisky.” Daisy gave her a half smile.
“Fine, once we have cured me of this poison, transported you back to Amelia, so you can do your descendant thing, destroyed Anka and her dark forces, then I will come back here to Paris and pay for every sandwich, every bottle of water—”
“And whisky,” Daisy reminded her with a smile.
“And whisky, and all will be right with the world.”
Daisy leaned over Torija’s lips and said, “Have I ever told you how sexy your accent is? Even though you were being sarcastic.”
Torija couldn’t help but smile at the comment. She didn’t think she had smiled and laughed so much in her life as since she met Daisy. “Did I ever tell you how sexy your Scottish brogue is?”
“I don’t have a brogue. That’s the Highlanders—I’m a strict lowlander. Haven’t you ever been to Scotland?” Daisy realized in a second what she had just said, and Torija’s smile faltered.
Of course she had been to Scotland. Very recently Victorija, as she was then, chased the Debreks to their castle on the very far end of Scotland and killed her grandmother.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean—It was just a joke. I’m sorry if I upset you.”
What a beautiful human being Daisy was. She never thought of herself, only others, and had taken the chance on redeeming an old vampire who could have killed her.
Torija stroked Daisy’s hair. “Don’t worry about it. I know what you meant. I have been to Scotland many times, but maybe it’s best not to dwell on it just now.”
“So, how are we getting to Scotland?”
“I know someone who has a private plane. We can fly into a small private airfield at night, and hopefully we won’t be spotted by any authorities.”
“Hopefully?” Daisy said.
“Well, let’s just say he is an expert at getting things into the country without anyone noticing.”
“And how do you pay this someone?”
