- About the Author
‘But I’m just wondering – with the greatest respect – whether it would be possible to bring this unfortunate episode to an end before it attracts unwanted attention. Many of us – both inside and outside the local community – would really appreciate that.’ His smile is ingratiating and over the top in equal parts. ‘We’ve worked hard to establish the good name of Nedanås, and I’m proud to say that we’ve had great success. As you know we should have a long-distance rail link next year, which will bring more businesses, more opportunities. People are moving into the area instead of moving away, and property prices are rising. Good schools and a low crime rate are key factors, and this business with . . .’ he pauses, pretends to search for the name, ‘Rylander risks giving us a bad reputation, which would be very unwelcome. You must forgive me if I’m a little crass, but to let a person like him destroy what so many others have built up over the years feels unreasonable to say the least.’
He clearly expects Anna to say something, but she chooses to keep quiet.
‘I know that you and Henry Morell have fallen out, Anna,’ he goes on, his voice softening. ‘Personally, I think that’s very sad. You’re a very well-thought-of police officer, in spite of that story in the papers, and we really want to keep you here in Nedanås.’
He is still smiling, but there is a sharpness in his expression.
‘But for that to happen, you need loyal friends. People who speak highly of you, people you can work with.’
She tries to remain calm, to ignore the underlying yet very clear threat in what he’s just said.
‘Marie, Bruno, Alex and Carina assaulted Simon Vidje on the night he died,’ she says icily. ‘Joe Rylander tried to blackmail them. Has Morell told you that as well?’
Andersson’s smile fades. ‘I did hear something along those lines.’
‘In that case, I’m sure you understand why I can’t simply abandon the investigation.’ She looks him in the eye, holds his gaze for a few seconds. He has the same hard lines around his eyes and nose as his daughter.
‘Can’t or won’t?’
‘Does it matter?’
They stare at each other in silence.
‘Right,’ Andersson says, getting to his feet. ‘I won’t take up any more of your time, Anna.’ He holds out his hand and she shakes it reluctantly. ‘I’m sure you’d prefer to be with Agnes, and I have a few calls to make.’
