  71. About the Author

Yesterday’s revelations are going around and around in her mind, and she doesn’t know which of them has made the biggest impression: the fact that Simon’s friends attacked and humiliated him, that Marie Sordi had already told Elisabet Vidje everything, or that the older woman has manipulated her for her own ends. Probably the latter, she thinks.

At least she now knows the truth about how Simon died, and yet there is something bothering her, a loose end that she can’t quite grasp.

She is determined to bring in the remaining three friends on Monday morning and give them a real grilling. They all had a good reason to be worried about what Rylander might have been able to expose.

Caia Bianca certainly wouldn’t want her valuable brand besmirched on social media. Marie and Bruno probably couldn’t afford to pay a blackmailer, although in Marie’s case the motive might be a little more complicated. She has already confessed to Elisabet, and must have realised that her aunt has been pulling strings in order to bring out the truth without putting any blame on her. And Anna still hasn’t been able to dismiss the idea that there might be another alternative, apart from the four friends. Someone who took care of Rylander in order to protect them.

Her phone buzzes – a text from Lisa Savic.

Have borrowed a bike – going to try and find Mörkaby quarry today. Do you know exactly where it is? No one around here seems to want to tell me. Thanks in advance.

Anna feels a pang of guilt. She has broken off her meetings with this likeable young woman on two occasions. She glances at Agnes, who appears to be slightly too absorbed in her phone. No doubt she too is conscious of the weird atmosphere between them, but perhaps Anna can do something about it – something that worked before.

‘Do you fancy going up to the quarry again? And we could take a look at the viewpoint on the north side of the ridge, if you like.’

They don’t say much on the way down, but within five minutes of picking up Lisa the atmosphere has improved significantly. Lisa makes a huge fuss of Milo and asks Agnes about her photographic equipment, which quickly leads them to Karl-Johan. Agnes talks enthusiastically about the mural and the outline of Simon Vidje’s body, and Lisa listens with interest. She asks the right questions at the right times, and Anna can’t help being fascinated by her. Lisa seems to be a genuinely good person, which is unusual to say the least.
