Everything had happened so quickly after the trip up the mountain in Peru. It was like one day she was living one life, and then bam, she became someone else. The things she’d seen in that courtyard in Cuzco defied logic—like the man with glowing eyes who moved with supernatural speed and had the strength of three men. And instead of trying to convince her what she’d seen was a trick of the light or a hypoxic hallucination, her boss had put her in charge of it. The fact that the Shepherds organization existed at all was proof that what she’d seen was reality.

Good and evil were waging a war of souls, and she’d been drafted and sent to the front lines. And yet they still expected her to behave and function like a regular case officer. How was that supposed to work? Quite possibly the weirdest thing of all was that the CIA already knew about the Dark Ones and the Shepherds . . . just one more compartmentalized program.

What’s next? she thought. Aliens, vampires . . . magic?

Her inner comedian instantly imagined her at lunch with Steve and him casually telling her over a ham sandwich that her next assignment would be to liaise with the monster hunters.

“And if you do well at that, Gayle,” she said, imitating his voice, “you can expect a promotion to the magic department.”

She chuckled, but the humor turned stale—like telling jokes at a funeral.

Because it’s not a joke. The Dark Ones are real and so is this mission.

She looked back at her computer screen, and the nagging feeling of being powerless but in charge instantly returned. Her hands had been tied by the Agency, but she had a strong feeling that before this was over, the Shepherds were going to need her help. How and when she’d execute to deliver that help was still foggy in her mind, but she felt confident that when the time came, she’d know what to do.

Until then, she did the only other thing she could think of and said a prayer for her new friends’ success and safety.
