“Certain Dark Ones are very good at actively masking their thoughts, locations, and memories. Victor takes it up a level from there, maintaining a psychic wall around himself at all times. That’s very hard to do and takes a lot of energy. Most people can’t keep it up for more than a few hours, but Victor is different,” Corbin explained. “He might be doing that with this weapon, shielding all the people involved from us. I don’t think he’s ever done that before, because the amount of concentration that would take would be insane, but he is the devil’s right-hand man, so who knows what he’s capable of.”
“Is that the same thing as scrubbing? You mentioned that word earlier.”
“No . . . ,” Corbin said, letting a pause hang on the air as if she really didn’t want to answer the question.
“What?”
The older girl blew air through her lips. “Remember what I just taught you about locating people by tracing their threads from contact to contact?”
“Yeah,” she said, not liking the look on Corbin’s face.
“Well, this guy—he scrubs those connections so Watchers can’t locate him by tracing threads.”
“By scrub do you mean kill?”
Corbin pursed her lips and nodded.
“He kills people simply because they crossed paths with him?” Sarah Beth stammered, aghast. “Random people, he just kills them?”
“Yeah . . . but he’s strategic about it; otherwise he’d be killing nonstop.”
“Has he—you know—scrubbed anyone we know? Anyone from here or from Trinity?”
“No one from here, Sarah Beth. We’re safe here because we have each other,” Corbin said, her voice solemn. “Enough about that. Let’s get to work. We need to find this guy.” She extended her hand to Sarah Beth. “We’ll do it together. The power of two.”
“Okay,” Sarah Beth said, clasping her fingers around Corbin’s. Corbin squeezed back.
“Father God, guide us,” Corbin said softly. “Help us find our way to what we need to see. Help us do Your will and always light the path You have for us.”
Amen, Sarah Beth added in her head. Then she took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and slipped into the Watcher world.
