Sarah Beth forced a smile and winced at the accompanying throb of pain. “Corbin needs me. I can’t stop until all the Dark Ones are taken down.”

“Listen to Pastor Dee, Sarah Beth,” Corbin said, kneeling next to Sarah Beth’s chair on the other side. “You’ve done enough. Michaela and I can handle it. We work well together. If Joshua Bravo goes out again, I’ll come get you .”

Sarah Beth smiled at her mentor and friend, noticing for the first time the heaviness in Corbin’s voice and the dark circles under her eyes. The tired smile Corbin wore did little to hide the weight of the silent burden she carried. Sarah Beth realized she’d come to think of her mentor as an adult but she was barely old enough to drive. Her mind’s eye flashed to the pages of Corbin’s sketchbook and horrors recorded over her years of service. Did Watchers develop PTSD?

Is that my future?

“Are you sure?” she said, her voice weary but the thought of a break irresistible.

“I’m sure,” Corbin said with a tender smile. “Take some Advil, drink a glass of water, and go to bed.”

“Okay.” Sarah Beth let Pastor Dee help her to her feet and escort her to the White Room. Pastor Dee rode the elevator down to the main level with her and opened the door for her. “You don’t need to walk me back, Pastor Dee. It’s okay.”

“No, it most certainly is not. I am your Keeper now, girl . . . ,” the woman said with a warm smile, mostly in her eyes, confirming Sarah Beth’s thought.

I have a Keeper.

“And I am going to tuck you in and make sure those roommates of yours do not wake you up.”

It was pointless to argue with Pastor Dee, so Sarah Beth surrendered and let herself be led to her dorm room—at the foot of the building’s cross layout, with the girls on the west side and the boys on the east.

Pastor Dee gave her a glass of water and two Advil and tucked her into bed like a little kid. As much as the attention was embarrassing, secretly she kinda liked it. Pastor Dee was a good woman.

I’m glad she’s my Keeper, she thought as she drifted off to sleep.

“That’s enough for me,” Rachel said, waving off a refill as Maria tried to top off her glass of wine.
