“And you think that means the team of engineers from the project, those still loyal to the CCP, can’t and won’t build another one? They have the plans, Jed.”
“Here we go—another mutually assured destruction scenario to justify a new Cold War arms race with China,” Jed said.
“Don’t be so melodramatic,” Schmidt said with a snort. “Those are two completely different scales of destruction. Nukes annihilate cities and blanket the planet in radioactive fallout. This weapon is nothing more than a glorified sniper rife. Don’t get me wrong; it’s terrible, but with proper study we can develop appropriate detection and countermeasures for it so no one gets incinerated ever again.”
“Somehow I don’t believe you,” Jed said, shooting a glance at Gayle, who looked at her hands.
“Jed,” Ben said softly. “I’ve had my issues with CIA over the years, but we’re on the same team. More importantly, you should know I have a great deal of trust and faith in the DNI, who is a close friend and benefactor of our task force. I don’t know Mr. Schmidt here well enough to take his word at face value, but neither do I know him well enough not to trust him. What I do trust is the judgment of the DNI. It’s time to let it go. Clear enough?”
Jed nodded, aware that his fists were still balled but also that both Gayle and Schmidt were staring at Ben with something that looked like reverence. His brain, still playing catch-up, zeroed in on the subtle but strategic comment Ben had made.
“I have a great deal of trust and faith in the DNI, who is a close friend and benefactor of our task force . . .”
So the DNI was part of the network that directly supported the Shepherds? Did that mean he was fully read in on the true nature of their work and their dark adversary?
“Mr. Schmidt, we appreciate your help and support. And let me add that Ms. James here is a gifted and capable case officer and liaison. We look forward to working with—” Ben stopped midsentence when the secure phone in his pocket chirped. “Excuse me, I have to take this,” he said, checking the caller ID and pacing away from the group.
Jed, still simmering, turned and watched the large forklift driving up to the side of the Boeing 717, intent on removing the weapon and transferring it to another plane. He shook his head and, without a parting word to Schmidt, walked over to where Ben was taking his call. When Jed was at his side, Ben put the phone on speaker and held it between them.
“Corbin, please repeat what you just said,” the Shepherd commander said.
