But one thing had to be made clear to Madison: Sherry would not become one of her conquests. “No, thanks. I prefer to sleep here.”
A confused expression gave way to an angry one. “Do you really think I would try to ravage you the minute you come into my bed?” Before Sherry could think of an answer, Madison said, “Do whatever you want. I don’t care. But do something about the dark circles under your eyes. You’re supposed to be happy.” She stomped toward her room and closed the door behind her.
Rubbing her neck, which still ached from spending last night on the couch, Sherry stared at the closed door. Did Madison really have her best interests at heart? She had to admit that she felt really drained and could use a good night’s sleep.
They were both adults, and at the end of the day, Sherry was nothing more than some kind of employee to Madison. Besides, if Madison wanted sexual encounters, she could find more attractive and more willing women in a heartbeat.
So what was she waiting for?
Madison had not even made it to the bathroom when there was a knock on the door. Had Sherry changed her mind? “Come in.”
It was indeed Sherry, who slowly opened the door, her gaze following the trail of clothes Madison had left behind while undressing. “Oh, I’m sorry, I—”
Madison looked down at herself. All she was wearing were panties and a bra. Was Sherry disturbed by the disarray on the floor, or was she a prude?
Reluctantly, she picked up her clothes. “Changed your mind?”
Sherry looked over her shoulder back to the living room as if she wasn’t sure herself.
With the stack of clothes in hand, Madison stopped in front of Sherry. “So?”
Sherry nibbled on her lower lip. It was kind of sexy. After a long exhale, she closed the door and walked past Madison as if wanting to get more distance between them. “Thanks for offering to share your bed with me.”
So she finally had come around. “Whatever. I’m going to take a shower.”
“Okay. And I…um, will get ready in the other bathroom and get my pillow.”
Instead of an answer, Madison strolled to the bathroom, closed the door with her hip, and threw the clothes into one corner. Yawning, she undressed, turned on the water, and stepped under the hot spray. Her eyes fell closed.
She didn’t get Sherry. Not that she usually would have cared, but Sherry was such a contradiction. One moment, she acted like a shy little bird, and the next she was kissing Madison almost senseless before reverting to being timid. But at least she had played her role perfectly at Grandmother Eileen’s. That was all that really mattered.
