Dain put one wing-arm around me and tugged me next to him, pressing his face against my side as he turned off the hot water and turned on the cold. "Thank you," he said. He sounded like he might cry, and he was trembling.

Worried, I started stroking his hair the way he liked. He wasn't happy. I needed to make him happy. "What can I do?" I asked, my voice shaking. "Please just tell me what to do."

"I know they told you not to tell," Dain said against my skin. "The thing I want most right now is to be with you, but the thing I want second-most is to know who they are. Is there any way you can remember, and tell me?"

I really, really wanted to tell him. But they'd told me not to. I was supposed to forget them! But they'd also told me that I needed to make Dain happy, and that it was the most important thing. That would let me do it. "Will it make you happy?" I asked, my voice shaking. "I'm supposed to make you happy. It's the most important thing."

He looked up at me, his golden eyes tormented. For a long moment, Dain stared up at me. Then he nodded, a slow, firm motion.

A flood of pleasure rushed through me, elation not just from me but from the part of my mind that refused to listen to me. A smile broke across my face, and I cupped his face in my hands. "Lord Lysanthir Miaquen invited Axily to lunch, but he was guarding me so he couldn't go on his own," I said, nodding seriously. "You know him, right? Axily Helezeiros? So I took him to lunch! And we had a really good time," I said, proud to have remembered their full names for him. "Axily and Ciradyl were guarding me today, and they brought me together. I didn't know Axily was friends with Lord Miaquen. Isn't that nice?"

"They're cousins," Dain said in a flat voice. He took a deep breath, and his mouth trembled as he smiled. "Thank you, Leah. You remembered well. Can you check the water now?"

He was smiling. That meant he was happy, and that was the only thing that mattered. I put my hand in the water, and it was warm but not scalding so I got in, sinking down with overwhelming happiness, because Dain had told me to take a bath and now I could. "What now?" I asked, looking up at him from the water, my hair floating around me.

"Now we'll stay here together for a while, perhaps until the bathwater cools and you no longer smell so much like desire," Dain said, looking down into my face with a smile but with sorrow in his eyes. "I'd like to tell you a story, to fill the time. Is there something you'd like to know about me?"
