The phone disconnects, and I finish with my hair, flipping it upside down and shaking it out. I apply a second coat of mascara and some fresh lipstick, pocketing the tube just in case. I try not to think about how long it’s been since I trimmed my hair or got highlights or a manicure.

Forget a manicure, I stare at my fingertips with a grimace. When was the last time I smoothed my nails with a file?

No, it’s fine. So I’m a bit out of touch with a salon. I work on furniture, for fuck’s sake. I have chickens.

Taking a deep breath, I smooth down my top and spin from side to side. I know I saw Lyle a month ago, but this still matters. I want to say I look better than I did at twenty-two. Healthier, anyway, despite the lack of expensive grooming. Leaving behind a diet of meal-replacement smoothies and juice cleanses will do that for you.

Gah. Fuck it.

I grab my keys and purse and slam the front door behind me.

Twenty minutes later, I’m holding the door open for Lorelai. This place looks new and is a trendy mix of rustic and environmentally responsible. I instantly like it. The gleaming bar is obviously well crafted and cared for but not in an ostentatious way. Exactly my jam. Overhead, there are plenty of lanterns glowing, casting everything in a flattering and cozy light. There’s an enormous fireplace in the center of the room, putting off just enough warmth that I immediately tug off my jacket, and Lorelai does the same. She raises her brows at my tunic.

“What?” I mouth.

She grins. “Nothing. You look perfect.”

I flash her a grateful smile and search the room for Cameron. He’s so tall, I figure I’ll see him first.

That’s the only reason I’m looking for him. Obviously.

I spot him right away, sitting at the bar, his body turned to face the door. His face registers recognition, and I walk his way, tugging my best friend behind me and steadily avoiding looking at the back of Lyle’s head. I slow to a stop in front of them right as Cam stands, his smile wide. Stage smile. Cameron might’ve left the business but putting on a happy front to smooth things over will always come second nature to him. Lorelai squeezes my hand once.
